Aaron Portzline @Aportzline
#CBJ have traded R.J. Umberger and a fourth-round pick in 2015 to #Flyers for Scott Hartnell.

Interesting trade. Not sure if that added 5th makes the return good enough for Philly. Hartnell is certainly the better player of the two. I thought Hartnell was older but he's actually younger than Umberger by about 2 weeks.

Good trade for Jackets. Hartnell will add few things to that lineup.

Wow. Didn't think Hartnells value had dropped that much. I know his contract sucks but he's twice the player Umberger is.
Not a good first trade for Hextall IMO.

I really like that trade for the Jackets, adds slot of grit to their front end.

Umberger 3 years left $4.6 million AAV
Hartnell 5 years left $4.7 million AAV

Not sure what this adds to the Flyers. They don't dump cap space. Maybe incoming details about salary retention?

Hartnell should add some good veteran leadership to a fairly young team as well. He'll be the second oldest guy on the team behind 33 year old Derek McKenzie.

Trade makes little sense IMO.
Hartnell is a much better player than Umberger.
Only thing I can think of is that Philly is looking to buy somebody out and by making this move it saves them 2 years of buyout penalty...

They have pretty similar contracts... Hartnell's is longer though.

Both players are on the downward trend but Hartnell is the better player. The term on his deal is why the flyers did it IMO

Hartnell's contract evens out the deal. That thing is going to stink in a few years.

This trade is essentially taking the weaker player to dodge the last 2 years of that deal. in 2 years, the Flyers have to re-up Voracek and Courturier, and then trading 1 year of Umberger (or buying him out) is much easier than Hartnell with 3 years, especially if he regresses further
