Habs re-sign Markov (3yrs, $5.75M AAV)
Marc Antoine Godin @MAGodin
3-year deal for Andrei Markov. I hear same money (5,75 M) than his previous two deals.
Renaud Lavoie @renlavoietva
Andrei Markov: 3 ans / 17 250 000$ total. #canadiens #tvasports

Seems a bit high for a 35 year old defender on the decline.
This also gives Subban a bit of negotiating room, as he'll probably be looking for more than this.

about what I expected. He had tons of leverage, not a great defensive core outside of Subban (Gorges is hurt a lot, some youngsters) Hope they have enough left to offer Weaver a contract.

Subban was getting 8+ regardless of what Markov got.

Do you think he'll get over $8 million?
I don't see him getting more than Weber does. That was an RFA offer sheet, to make him the highest paid defender in the league.

Weber makes14 million next season. I think he'll probably get 8.

More the structure of Weber's deal than the AAV, with all that money up front.

Bad contract but Markov is a critical piece of the Montreal defence.

I'd say he could've gotten more on the open market.
Oilers for sure would have offered more/longer.
He basically paid several million dollars in cash to not play in Edmonton.
Good decision.

he's also a mentor for Emelin, who has the tools to be a pretty decent player.

I think this is a great deal for Montreal. As mentioned by habernac, he will be mentoring Emelin, and maybe other graduates. He is their #2 behind Subban, it was a good signing.

Markov is only going to get slower and less agile as this deal progresses and that's saying a lot considering how much he lost after his injuries. I agree the price tag is probably in line/better then an open market deal however, his effectiveness should be a serious concern beyond next season at that price tag - especially if he's going to be asked to skate with partners like Subban/Emelin.
