Default Edmonton bids for the 2022 Commonwealth Games

How exciting! I hope they get it. I wasn't around for the 1978 Games but will definitely make the trip if they are awarded the 2022 event.

Looking forward to watching the coverage of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Only 21 days away!

If they get the games and Canada ends up sharing the World Cup with the States, would this open the door for Calgary to be a WC Host City?

Ergh. Edmonton is not a place I want to share with the rest of the world.

Edmonton did a bang-up job in '78 and Universiade. They'll do it again if they're successful.

Is the Commonwealth Games still a big deal? Was it ever?

I have vague memories of 78, and 94 in Victoria was purposely small.

My main memory of the 94 Games was that they had sugar packets with the mascot on them doing the various sports. I would always grab the "shooting" one because the image of a smiling killer whale holding a rifle is one of the funniest things I've ever seen.

I don't recall seeing much coverage of any Games since 1994. The only thing I remember from the last one was that there were issues with raw sewage at the facilities in India.

It was a bigger deal 30 years ago, but now I believe there are fewer countries that participate. Not sure why it even exists to be honest, seems like a good way for countries/cities to lose money.

Let's be serious, the Commonwealth games is really just an entire sporting event fostered by first world white British Commonwealth nations to rack up track and field gold medals until they're eventually destroyed at the Olympics.

and that's why it's endured for 84 years and includes Central American, SE Asian and African nations participating in 20 sports including Athletics.

I guess you can say the same thing for all multi-sport events outside of the Olympic Games.

Will the Oilers playoff drought still be intact by then?

The Commonwealth Games does seem like a largely unnecessary event at this point. Same with the Pan-Am games. In both cases, cost more than anything.

IMO, it would almost make more sense to break apart the Commonwealth Games into their component sports and hold individual Commonwealth championships for athletics, cycling, boxing, etc.

Surprisingly, there has never been a soccer tournament at the CG. There is a field hockey tournament, however.

All that being said, they really aren't sporting Giants:

Spoiler!

I would go to watch Sevens, as the best in the world, bar none would be there.
