Flames Super Series 1983 - Calgary Flames vs Russia All goals listed in minutes per video

Stumbled upon this video quite be accident. In the 80's NHL teams would play games against the Russians in what was called a "Super Series". This game took place on Jan 3rd 1983 in the old Stampede Corral. Gives you a chance to players like Lanny McDonald in his prime.

Flames won the game 3-2

Please note it is the Russian broadcast of the game.

Okay everyone, I managed to find all the goals and have listed the minutes in the video so you can see them....

Scroll to the minutes and secs in the video

24:00 Lanny McDonald with his patented one timer shot from the left faceoff circle.
Hits Myshkin up high and Kent Nilsson puts in the rebound.

33:39 Guy Chouinard puts one past Myshkin.

48:40 Igor Larinov, part of the famous KLM line (Krutov, Makarov & Larinov) dekes the Flames goaltender and puts one in.

56:48 Another patented one timer from Lanny in favourite spot goes in the net.

1:18:04 Vladmir Krutov takes the pick wide of Phill Russel and avoids the stick check as he skates acroos the net and puts one in.

1:44:27 Not a goal but worth definately a see. Lanny gets the puck in front of the Russian net and with one hand holds the stick and the puck and skates to behind the net, along the boards showing his great strength.

Holy crap... at 20:15 the Russians actually dump and chase it. From what I've heard, I thought they'd never do that.

Is there a scientific reason why all these Russians shoot left?

Thank you so much for posting this. I would have been 12 when this game took place. To be able to watch some of my favorite childhood idols, in such a great quality recording for its age, rekindles the great feelings growing up a Flames fan in that era.

It also reinforces how much the game has evolved. I believe the Oiler dynasty of the 80's and how the Flames became the better team by the end of that decade was a LARGE contributor to how the game is played today. Everyone back then knew we were witnessing hockey history, we just didn't realize the impact it would have on hockey's future.

Yeah, neat to see games from the days of the Corral. I really don't remember watching any Flames games until 1984. Oddly enough that 82-83 team finished below .500 on the season.

Not sure but the USSR team from the 1984 Canada Cup were all left-handed shots as well.

At one time, left handed writers were forced in school to write right handed. Left was wrong, right was right. If this was still the policy in the USSR, all left handed people would be converted to doing everything right handed. Of course 90% of right handed people shoot left handed.

The stigma was especially widespread in the former Soviet Union, where pedagogical trends stressed qualities like conformity, discipline, and uniform penmanship.

"It was simply a lack of knowledge that played a role," says Gennady Chichkanov, a Moscow-based clinical psychologist. "It's simpler when a child writes with his right hand. So it's easier to put something in his right hand and say, 'Write.' That's how it was in the Soviet Union."

I remembered this game really well because I won the Calgary Sun contest in picking who will score the winning goal and the time of the winning goal. I think the prize was a couple of tickets to Winnipeg Jets-Calgary Flames game. There are other stuff that I got but can't remember what it was. My picture was even at Calgary Sun receiving the prize.

As fot the game, that was an awesome game.

That Soviet play by play guy needed to calm down a little. He was Hughson-esque on the Krutov goal. Good Lord.

That was also the year Lanny McDonald scored 66 goals finishing second to Gretzky who scored 71 that season.
