Out with the old in Jovanovski, in the with new in Ekblad. 20 years ago they first drafted a big blueliner 1st overall. Two days ago it was Ekblad.

Did jovo have a NMC ? Have to think they could have traded him to a team with lots of cap space.

Sounds like the Havlat situation where he could have been traded but probably refused so he could get his money and pick his team.

no NTC/NMC according to capgeek...

it is possible he wants to retire. as a 35+ contract his cap hit would cost against the cap if he retires.

with a compliance buyout he doesn't count

Perhaps the most overpaid NHL player the last decade.

the right price would be negative $3m plus a draft pick

My favorite Jovanovski video is the one where he goes to the penalty box and someone dubbed in ape noises. I think it was from the 2004 playoffs.

I think it's more likely he's lounge chair bound.

Bummer, I was hoping to watch him play for one more season. He's old, but he really was a stabilizing presence for the Panthers in their own zone. When he was out of the lineup they were awful defensively. He was also their captain and a pretty good one too. Kinda feel bad for Jovocop.

Still, plenty of young talent on defense without Jovanovski, and even if Ekblad doesn't make the team right away (although he likely will) there's still a decent starting 6 without him.

Gudbranson-Campbell
Gilbert-Kulikov
Olsen-Robak
Petrovic

BUT, it does look better with him in the lineup, even if it's as a 2nd pairing d-man. It is starting to look like a decent NHL quality defense, but still need a good puck mover to pair with Ekblad on the top pair because Campbell is already 35.

Ekblad-Campbell
Gilbert-Gudbranson
Olsen-Kulikov
Petrovic/Robak

I honestly thought he retired 2 years ago.

So there's that.

I actually never minded Jovo. 1,128 games and 500 points is a great career for a defenceman. He helped Canada win a gold medal too, which is nice.

He's getting old, so he might be done, but I could see a 1 year/1 million dollar deal for a team that needs a decent 5-6 guy.
