Thumbs down Mormon Church still living in the 18th century

Founder of Ordain Women, creator of Mormon Stories website are threatened with excommunication.

Quote:
Mormon feminist, returned missionary and temple-attending member Kate Kelly cherishes her church — so much so that she desires to play an even bigger role in it.

Now Kelly may lose her place in the faith altogether.

The founder of the Ordain Women movement, which has been asking LDS leaders to let women join Mormonism’s all-male priesthood, has been threatened with excommunication.
Quote:
Kelly, a human-rights attorney who until recently lived in Vienna, Va., received an email Monday from Mark Harrison, her Mormon bishop, inviting her to attend a June 22 "disciplinary council" to consider "disfellowshipment or excommunication, on the grounds of apostasy."

Kelly, who is staying in Utah until she moves to Kenya shortly with her husband, said Wednesday she was "totally, totally floored" by the email. "It is a deep devastation and sorrow."

For a devout Mormon such as Kelly, excommunication, or loss of church membership, "is a kind of spiritual death," she said. "It means that your ordinances are moot and that you are being forcibly evicted from your eternal family."
Quote:
To regain full membership, Wheatley wrote, the feminist must take down the Ordain Women website, break ties with the group, and "stop trying to gain a following for yourself or your cause and lead others away from the church."

Kelly replied that she couldn’t do that and be "authentic," and because she no longer lives in Virginia, will not be attending the disciplinary council, which is scheduled to take place in the same Mormon stake where feminist Sonia Johnson was excommunicated in 1979.

Surely we can't be surprised by how ass-backwards the LDS church is.

[Insert four letter expletive that rhymes with duck] the Mormon church.

Sounds almost as bad as Catholicism, or any other organised religion for that matter.

Joseph Smith, the founder of the Church of Mormon, translated golden plates using a stone in a hat.

I don't think we should be too shocked by what their followers do.

Is there really such a thing as a progressive religion that isn't living in the stone ages?

I don't know much about Buddhism but I've heard scholars say it isn't a religion. Here it says

Quote:
Is it a religion?
It is neither a religion in the sense in which that word is commonly understood, for it is not "a system of faith and worship owing any allegiance to a supernatural being."

LDS is popular because it offers eternal life with your earthly family as one of its tenets. That's attractive to almost everyone. If I was a believer I'd probably go back to LDS (I was raised in the church though I didn't attend regularly after about age 9).

Outside of that though, there's an awful lot not to like...as with any organized religion.

Plagiarized from the Bible.

Quote:
The Book of Mormon borrows copiously from the Bible. More than eighteen chapters of Isaiah are contained in it. And hundreds of parallels exist between the Book of Mormon and the New Testament – so much that Mark Twain quipped that the Book of Mormon "seems to be merely a prosy detail of imaginary history, with the Old Testament for a model; followed by a tedious plagiarism of the New Testament" (Roughing It, p. 110).

The most telling proof of plagiarism is the fact that the author of the Book of Mormon copied the King James Version verbatim right down to the style of print. When the translators of the KJV translated from Hebrew to English in the Old Testament, they added clarifying words, italicizing them to let the reader know they were not in the original text.

The author of the Book of Mormon apparently did not realize this. Consequently, in the hundreds of verbatim passages from the Bible, the Book of Mormon includes the italicized words. example Though the book was ostensibly translated from plates written in reformed Egyptian, which were copies from the original Hebrew writings, the only way to account for the italicized words is that the book was not translated from gold plates at all, but rather from a King James Bible.

Polygamy

Quote:
Mormonism taught polygamy until Utah was threatened with losing admittance to the Union. Then they got a "revelation" banning plural marriage. It is interesting that all the years they were polygamous, the Book of Mormon taught (in Jacob 2:24) that polygamy was abominable to God. Emma Smith, Joseph’s wife, was told by "revelation" that if she did not submit to the polygamy teaching she would be "destroyed" (Doctrine and Covenants, Section 132). Apostle Orson Hyde claimed that Jesus married both Mary and Martha (Journal of Discourses, Vol. 4, pp. 259-260; Journal of Discourses, Vol. 2, p. 210).

On a positive note.....

The Mormon Church was the ONLY religious organisation to help out with the flood clean up here in High River. They went around in large groups helping residents clean out thier basements and any other work that needed to be done. As much as we like to put down religion, they still do good things in the world today.

I don't know why this is any different from other religious organizations. I mean I know a few offshoots of Christianity allow female pastors/priests, but the Catholic and most others don't.

And yeah, I've always understood Buddhism to be more of a spiritual philosophy than a religion. Yes there is a difference.

Make no mistake - while the LDS religion may be built on an absolutely outrageous doctrine - they are some of the nicest people I've ever met.

I'm sure it wasn't entirely altruistic. Call me cynical, but I'm sure they like to recruit new members.

Unlike the JW's I always find the Moromns to be very polite when you tell them you're not interested and easy to start a conversation with. Always honest and upfront and very sincere in what they believe.

It was through the generous volunteer efforts on thier part that they were able to display the sincereity of their concerns for the well beings of others. They gained a huge amount of respect in the High River community.

I know that to be false. I know of at least one youth group from First Alliance in South Calgary going. But perhaps you're talking about the large scale involvement?
