Buffalo's and Florida's 1st round picks are in play
http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/junio...-at-nhl-draft/
Quote:
According to sources at the NHL combine this weekend, several teams have aggressively pursued trades with Florida and Buffalo, owners of the first and second overall picks respectively. Panthers general manager Dale Tallon has said from Day 1 that he’s entertaining all offers, though he has given no indication exactly what the price tag might be, nor what make or model he’s in the market for. For his part, Sabres GM Tim Murray has shuffled the deck aggressively since he arrived in mid-season. The prevailing wisdom in the marketplace is that Tallon and Murray might be motivated dealers.
One scout aware of multiple offers for the top two picks said, “The going price to move up into those [first two] spots would be picks — a high first and a second or third — and an established player that helps your top two lines.”

Lets trade and go into the draft with 1 2 and 4.
But seriously, at that cost, I'd rather just stay at 4.

So we'd have to trade our 4th OA, our 2nd (34th OA), and a top 6 player to move up 3 spots?
No thanks.

That price seems rather high in a year without a clear cut number one.

In a year with a clear cut number one, the picks wouldn't be available.
In a year like this, it's the price of getting the player you really want.

Canucks media people have said that Benning is a huge fan of Reinhart and is trying to move up
it wouldn't surprise me if they put together a package to move up to 1 (or 2) to get him

The 'young established player that would help your top 2 lines' is almost an overpayment alone.

That price is definitely not worth it. Bennett, or Ekblad is not that much better than Draisaitl to give up a second and a top 6 player.

If you could get somebody like Glencross to waive I think it would be worth it.

High first: 4th overall
2nd or 3rd: Pittsburgh's 3rd (86th overall)
Established top 6 forward: Hudler?

How often does this same dance happen? Every year.
GMs say they will listen to picks but 99% of the time, the offers aren't good enough and they make the pick.
I read a report that Buffalo is looking to add another first round pick per Craig Custance:
The Sabres own three second round picks and are looking to add another first round pick. Some teams have a draft pick value chart when trading draft picks. Trading roster players to get back into the first round may be a more likley scenario. The Sabres will get calls on Christian Ehrhoff, but a team may have to pay big as he a good cap number of $4 million and because of the cap recapture penalty if he retires early.
So if true, not sure why they would give this year's first up. Sounds like Tallon is really using the media to drum up interest and create an auction. Too bad Steve Ballmer is not a NHL GM...

Exactly.
Just because the teams can't agree on who is number one doesn't mean that each team doesn't value one prospect head and shoulders above the others

That's still overpayment for the 1st OA.
1st OA (Ekblad) <<< Hudler + Pens' 3rd (86th OA) + 4th OA - (Reinhart/Bennett/Draisaitl)

I'm sure we could make a good offer for that pick. I'm not so sure we should.
4th overall, Colorado's 2nd & Pittsburgh's 3rd would be the maximum I would pay for either of those picks. If we needed to add a top 6 forward I wouldn't be adverse to trading Glencross or Stajan. Florida or Buffalo would want Backlund, Baertschi, Gaudreau or Hudler though, and all of the above are an over-payment IMO.

The reason these 2 guys are willing to trade down is that there is no clear cut top guy and I dont think Tallon sees Ekblad as 1st overall talent.
That is precisely the reason I hope Treliving stays at 4, because I think there`s a good chance Ekblad falls to us.

Considering that we were willing to part with Colorado's 2nd earlier, I'm assuming adding Hudler is overpaying.
Perhaps as Ashasx said, Glencross waives - would that do it? And I dunno why you lumped 4th overall in there separate from the Sams and Leon.
