Voted no.
I don't want Ortio backing up playing 20-30 games either.
Sign a better NHL back-up than MacDonald, and if they perform, have Ortio and Ramo start 50-60 games in their respective leagues.

Noooooo. Find a better UFA replacement and give Ortio tons of starts in the AHL.

I voted yes because as it stands he's an option for both the NHL and the AHL. We can probably do better on the UFA or trade market though, at least I hope so. If he comes into camp in shape this time, maybe he'll be okay.

Voted yes. Ramo should be the starter for the Flames next year with Joey as a backup. Give Ortio a year to develop in Adirondack and only being called up if we have an injury.. Let him go the year after when Ortio is ready to make the jump to the NHL.

I voted "no", but not because he "isn't an NHL calibre backup".
But because the team is in a position to take a gamble on somebody who has potential.
The same way they did with Karlsson, Ramo, Berra, Brust, et al.
Most of the time it won't work, but it did land us the guy who will probably be the Flames' starter this coming season, and the club is in a position to try it again.
I say go for it. Let's see who this year's "Best Goalie Not In The NHL".

MacDonald or Greiss would be my two choices.
MacDonald seems like a great dressing room guy, and he isn't too good, so he won't hide any warts in games which would be good for overall development.
Greiss has potential, and seems like a potential "steal".

I voted yes, not because hes a quality stopper but because who cares?
His job is to give Ramo rest and if we lose those games then we lose those games. This is year 2 so my expectations are still very, very low.
I mean, we could gamble on someone else, but why? And, as is obvious, Ortio needs to be playing games, games he isnt going to get in the NHL.
If Ramo gets hurt then Ortio comes up and Joey can still operate the door.

Huh? Do you remember that he called out the whole team after a loss where he let some softies in?

Give Ortio 20 games and find an AHL'er for the farm.

Voted no. I'd like to see us try to snag Al Montoya or Cam Ward.

Or they could give Ortio 65 games on the farm and get an NHL backup to play 20 games.

But if you are going to sign anyone, it might as well be someone with the potential to at least have some positive asset potential in the future. We should be doing as much to push Ramo as possible. MacDonald doesn't do that.

my sentiment exactly. Macdonald is an acceptable backup goalie at the NHL level, but still voted for the last option, as i don't want him re-signed but also want ortio getting in starter time with the heat.

Yes, they could do that. I'm suggesting they give Ortio the NHL games.

Okay, I kind of see where you're coming from, but I figure that Karri Ramo is going to be at the tail-end of his usefulness by the time the Flames are competitive again.
I see Ramo ending up as the Turek-esque backup to the next goaltender, be that Ortio or someone else, once the Flames are competitive and in that vein his being pushed or if his backup is MacDonald or a shooter-tutor as fairly irrelevant.
I will agree that from a competitive perspective it does make more sense to have someone that can push him so long as that kind of individual can be acquired at all and at a reasonable cost.

You want a backup who can push Ramo and potentially take the starters job if Ramo stumbles. MacDonald isn't that guy.

I like Joey, but if you're spending $900,000 on a goalie, you at least want one with upside.

Voted no because I think the flames can get a better back-up. While Ramo should be the starter he needs to be pushed. Don't see MacDonald as any threat to Ramo losing starting gig.
