Calgarian killed while fighting in Syria
Good riddance....

Another Canadian has been killed Syria, reportedly a victim of the infighting between groups opposed to the regime of President Bashar Assad.
News broke Tuesday on social media that Abu Talha Al-Kanadi – which was a kunya, or nickname, for Calgary resident Damian Clairmont – was killed by fighters with the Free Syrian Army.
Clairmont left his home in Alberta in November 2012 and allegedly joined the Al Qaeda-linked group Jabhat al-Nusra.

You know that's a misprint in the Koran right. Its not 72 virgins waiting to service you. Its one 72 year old virgin who hates sex.

It's kind of a shame that someone who clearly cares so much about making a difference was left to slip through the cracks of society as a result of severe mental illness. He probably felt isolated and alone and confused as a young teen after a suicide attempt and was preyed upon by religious extremists and brainwashed into thinking that this was the right thing to do. I feel for his family and even for him in a way. One has to think that if his mental health issues were addressed at a younger age, he may be still here in Calgary, making a difference in the world in a more positive way.

That doesn't concern Rerun. He's just taking glee from the death of an evildoer.

Nothing too unexpected, but the article states it was likely he was radicalized in Calgary by elements of the local community. Furthermore, the lead imam of the Al Madina Calgary Islamic Centre didn't deny that fanatics do exist and are brainwashing kids. Clairmont's name came up when CSIS targeted a local extremist group.
Scarier stuff when it hits close to home.

It's a shame, one more day and he would have changed his mind once he heard that Shania Twain is playing at Stampede this year.

Tahera Mufti, a spokeswoman for the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, said self-radicalization — particularly among those individuals headed to the Syrian civil war — remains a major concern for the spy agency.

The CSIS' spokesperson speaking about radical Islam has the last name Mufti, that is hilarious ... or quite adept hiring?

Not by Imams that's for sure. They routinely call these guys "terrorists" and "cowards".
I've seen this guy around and heard he had left to Syria to fight so not surprised he's dead. He's not the only one from Calgary who left to fight but make no mistake it isn't coming from the leaders of the mosque.

Yeah, it's exactly the kinda story (or satirically inverse) that people use that comment for... I don't think I've read a single post on here that said radicalization was an American foible.
Swing and a miss.
Anyway, on the thread topic, it is concerning, but at least these people are going over to the hot spots to fight, instead of planning attacks here. Though people in the intelligence/law enforcement agencies should definitely be looking at where these people are getting radicalized. Of course, I assume they are.

My concern is the radicals that go over there and spend a few years learning about firearms and explosives, and killing... and then come back to Canada even further radicalized. What then?
As I said before, good riddance.

Well like I said, it's a concern. As for solutions, I don't really have any. There are people more qualified on it. Obviously there are no quick solutions.

At this point, this all comes down to education, finding the recruiters and locking them in solitary confinement for the next 50 years, and the Muslim community as a whole standing up and pushing the message that this radicalized interpretation of their faith is not acceptable.
I mean, you can go in and bust skulls, but the radical's in the community will point to it as proof that this is somehow a war between faiths and find their recruitment to be easier.
I strongly believe that if you leave this country to go fight as a Jihadist that it doesn't matter if you were born here in Canada, you aren't allowed back into the country, and we will turn you over to the authorities in the country that you caused trouble in. If they torture and kill you, that's your fault, Canada won't be there to help you and bring you home.
