Default Please recommend a Dog Trainer

Tried searching and no luck but I'm looking for a dog trainer for my 7 month old pup. I've Googled and it comes up with so many but hardly any reviews in order to make an informed decision, so I'm looking to my CP family for help.

Background info:
7 month old male Cavapoo (Cavalier/Poodle) that is fixed . He's pretty much well trained in letting us know when he has to go outside in order to go..good at listening to basic commands (sit, stand and down). I think I want to deal with his behavioral issues mostly..as he gets way too excited when people come over, including us, by jumping and running around. Still likes to pick up random things from the floor or my socks and run away from us when we try to get it back from him. Barking at the slightest noise he hears coming from elsewhere. Lastly, he constantly pulls when being walked, so I'd like to start training him to heel.

Could anyone recommend a good trainer or classes that may come close to dealing with behavioral stuff, I know it won't be exactly dealing with all the concerns I have, but your reviews and outcomes from certain trainers will definitely help! I'm in the NW, so something closer would be great.

Thanks CP

Most problems go away when dogs get enough exercise. The Halti works well with dogs that pull.

I am pretty sure Silver here on CP is a dog trainer.

There are a few rules that you should always follow.

Ignore the dog when you first come home. Only until it calms down do you reward it with attention.
If it gets too excited with others. Correct the behavior by crating it until it calms down. Then let it out. If it persists so do you.
You always eat before your dog.
You leave the house first on walks
When walking around the house the dog moves out of your way. You don't move out of its way.
Very short leash so the dog always walks beside and slightly behind you. A longer leash is a reward for a dog that behaves properly.
Your dog is not an equal and must sit on the floor or if small enough on your lap only.
Only put food in the dish. Never feed it at the table or in the living room.
Bones are only allowed on the dog bed.

Dogs are pack animals that live in Dens. Crate them during the day when you are out. They will feel safer.

This. My dog used to pull so hard on his leash that he couldn't breath, ever since I got one of these he's been much better. It was an immediate change. Only downside is he runs to hide if he sees the collar so I have to put the leash on him first, get him outside, then put the collar on.

I took my dog to a place called Sit Happens.
I liked it because you get a # of sessions and you check their calendar and go to the classes on the times/dates which fit your calendar. I believe you get a year to use up all your sessions.
I found it to be ok to learn the basics.

I suggest you go with low expectations. If you're going with the mindset that after 6-8 sessions that your dog will be magically trained, you'll be disappointed. Don't get me wrong, you'll see some improvement, but it requires lots and lots of patience and practice on your own outside of your classes.

Ive also heard good things about Clever Canines, but haven't been there myself. I know they have a pretty hardcore (and expensive) program.

Heeling is tough. Ive been trying to get my guy to do a consistant heel at my left knee for over a year now. After a year, I'd give him maybe a 7/10. His pulling has decreased significantly, but he still wanders off a bit to chase some good smells as we come across them.

What I found to be effective was to stop walking every time he pulls. Wait till he comes back to the "start" position, give him a treat, then start walking again and then repeat over and over. It takes time. When you're first starting out, it could take you like 15 mins to walk 4-5 steps...

I used this guy J-C St.Louis a couple years back. He use to train K9 with the Calgary Police. He was very firm and expects your 100% commitment. I really liked him, he came right to our house and helped us correct a few behaviour issues with my 4 year old dog.

We are also looking for some doggy classes. Has anyone tried the beginner classes offered by the Calgary humane society? Our 5 year old peke could use a refresher course and I think a beginner course would be best. He is fairly well behaved, but we could use some tips and techniques to get him listening better. He had fairly major back surgery a year ago and it seems that his recovery affected his behavior a bit.

My wife is an excellent dog trainer. She works at a veterinary clinic, and is also a certified dog trainer on the side. She currently only advertises on kijiji, although I'm trying to get her to branch out and do it full time.

Her rates depend on where you live in the city, as she will come to you to work on your specific issues in your home.

Link to her kijiji ad is here. She re-posts the ad weekly so not sure if the link will work much past today... If not just search kijiji for the ad.

After reading some of the responses so far, I would confidently say that you should contact my wife (Ashley). Also, if you could tell her that I recommended her to you that would be great as I can use the brownie points.

Just to jump in here a bit with a question.

For those of you that went to a trainer did you find them useful/did they concentrate much on managing high prey drive?

I have a pretty well trained dog with the exception that she turns into a complete unresponsive, headstrong basketcase once she sees a squirrel. I appreciate that this is how she is wired and it can't be cured but would love to know how best to manage it.

Should I be looking for someone that trains hunting dogs?
