That was their biggest problem. Nabokov is not a starting goalie in 2014. They should be much better this year.

hey, good for them. Coincides nicely (and likely not unrelatedly) to their decision to give away next year's pick.

4 year deal according to their website
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
Halak's new deal with NYI is four years, $18M for an AAV of $4.5M.

That's a solid deal for the Isles, especially if the cap is rising.

Always liked Halak, he should do well there. Maybe NYI can get out of the basement now.

Good deal for the Islanders. Halak is a solid keeper in the NHL.

Solid move, I'd be happy with that as an upgrade over Nabokov, unfortunately he's just getting a bit too old to remain competitive every single game.

think they'll finish next year with a higher draft pick than 5th, now that they have halak all year? they obviously think so

They're probably hoping for a healthy Tavares, and maybe some other UFAs too. They definitely need to replace Moulson/Vanek on that top line.

I think Cammalleri with JT would be a great combo. With Okoposo on the RW, that's a pretty solid line.

Snow pulls one out for once... essentially Bouchard/Regin for Halak.

Hey, Snow did something right for a change. Good deal and a 4th round pick well spent.

Arthur Staple @StapeNewsday
Garth Snow told me earlier that he has had "good conversations" with Evgeni Nabokov's agent about a return as backup to Halak. #Isles

I'd love if we could somehow get the isles first rounder this year. We have to have something they really want/need.

Halak is dreadfully underrated. This gives the Isles average, at least, goaltending. Considering every other year they've been almost dead last in that category, this is a huge boost for their team. Plus Tavares et al are a year ahead in their development. A new owner and a ton of cash to spend. Hopefully, these guys pull something off.

They're a young team too. Can't see them wanting anything short of Brodie+ or Monahan. The only other asset we have that comes anywhere close to bringing back that kind of an asset is Gio, but he's probably too old for their team structure.
