Default Which non-Flames UFAs do we target?

Here is a list of all the upcoming UFAs at the end of this season:

http://capgeek.com/free-agents/

Given that we may have issues with Cammy leaving and trying to meet the cap floor, who do you see us pursuing?

Honestly someone like Heatley coming in for a year or two wouldn't be terrible... wouldn't be ideal, but it'd help us with the cap floor for sure, not that he would get as much money as he's on now.

I would love to see them try for Moulson, Setoguchi or Penner as far as wings are concerned (only one though)

Don't think we target any centers, we've got Stajan, Backlund, Monahan to work in our top 3, plus another potential guy coming in through the draft and someone like Granlund coming in from the A.

On Defence, if we still have Wideman and Gio, I'm not sure it makes sense for us to try pick up any older big name free agents, thought I think if they could get someone in their late 20s it could work out, but I'd still rather not.

We probably need to pick up another Goalie as I'm not sure we want Joey Mac backing up the entire year... if we could somehow manage to get Brian Elliott that would be awesome, otherwise someone like Ray Emery might do the trick.

Love to hear everyone else's thoughts, I'm just rattling off a few ideas here for fun.

Jagr... it'd be a treat to see a surefire 1st ballot hall-of-famer (even if he is in 40's). He'd take a 1 year deal, wouldn't mind being traded, maybe help put some more butts in seats/in front of the Flames on TV... oh ya and he's still a good player.

Matt Niskanen would be the only UFA that I would target. I think Moulson will head back to play with Tavares. I could see Burke liking Callahan, but that's not the direction the Flames need - his contract is going to be 6+ year for $6M per.

If the Flames can shed themselves of Wideman and SOB, I'd love to see Sarich come back on a 1-year deal to play bottom pairing minutes.

For the Flames, right now, UFAs should fill the bottom lines and pairings and be solely stop gaps. Any big and/or long term deals would be a horrible misstep.

On Wing, maybe a guy like Skille if the pro scouts think he has upside to an NHL guy. He has been a tweener so far with a couple of organizations.
Perhaps a guy like Kulemin might be worth a look - could be a rebound potential here, and money needs to be spent to reach the floor. Since he has not had a good year, might not get the attention guys like Moulson will get.
On Defence, perhaps Nikitin might be worth a look, or if a guy like Meszaros wants a short term deal to restore value.
In goal, there are a lot of guys who have done well as backups lately, Peters, Greiss, Johnson, guys like that who would be content with a 1a/1b arrangement would be the best fit.

have to remember too, being a low team, the Flames have to pay or offer a chance to rebuild a career/get more minutes

I like Setoguchi. Alberta guy with some talent and from a winning culture. I'd likee him on the Flames.

a goalie like Elliott, Greiss or Peters

Ryan Carter would be a big upgrade on Westgarth; Burke had him for a few season's in Anaheim

Jay McClement would be nice; the Flames could win a few more faceoffs

Think Burke looks at the following areas:

Right Handed Forward with Size/Grit
Dave Bolland: C/RW
Ryan Callahan: RW
Devin Setoguchi:RW
Steve Downie: RW

Right Handed D-Man
Matt Niskanen
Matt Greene

Goalie to Platoon/Backup
Jonas Hiller
Jaroslav Halak
Brian Elliot
Thomas Greiss

Projected Lineup Next Year

Hudler - Monahan- Colborne
Glencross- Stajan- Jones
(Gaudreau/Baertschi) - Backlund- (RW)
(Abbotsford)- Bouma- Mcgrattan
(Abbotsford)

Giordano-Brodie
Smid - (RD)
Russell-Wideman
Wotherspoon

Ramo
(Backup)

Barring any trades the roster looks like that.

Need a right winger with a right handed shot who can put up decent points.

He isn't small, but he isn't huge, but I'd want Radim Vrbata.

Defense, pick Greene. Burke would love his size and he would also be a good 5/6 defenseman that can play top 4 minutes if he has to, pretty much an upgrade to Chris Butler. RH shot as well.

Niskanen would probably join us too if we did quite the overpayment.

Goalies, I would want either Emery or Elliott, preferably Elliott.

Setoguchi, Downie, Niskanen, Stastny.

All are young(ish), fair amount of size and truculence, will definitely get us above cap floor.

Setoguchi, Niskanen and Greene are my choices. I like the idea of Skille and maybe Elliot.
I really hope we give a one year deal to a guy like Peter Mueller though. Big skilled right winger and only 26.

Setoguchi is kind of a perfect target for the Flames ... big, RH shot, Alberta boy. He's coming off a bad season, so maybe he'd settle for a short term contract to try to earn a bigger one. If he does, we could flip him at the deadline for picks (or even re-sign him if needed).

Jagr and Niskanen are the only ones I would hope for. And maybe a backup goalie too.

Matt Greene first and foremost. He just makes sense on this team and fills a glaring need that O'Brien never filled.

Matt Moulson because he is a really solid goal scorer that goes to the front of the net and is still in his prime. Plus he's bigger than Cammalleri and probably slightly better defensively. Only drawback is he plays left wing.

Brian Elliott because he's a backup that can, and has previously, play in a starters role if need be. This is just in case Ramo doesn't have the same game as he did in the 2nd half. I don't want to go years without a capable backup again. I think Elliott knows there won't be much opportunity to play behind Miller (assuming he re-signs in St. Louis).

I wouldn't be opposed to either Moulson or Penner on the Flames as long as the term isn't overly long. Amount doesn't matter as we just need to hit the floor. I can't see Penner keeping up with the Flames pace at practice though, and especially not in a game Also I think Moulson might be more drawn to a contender, however with the right dollar amount he may just forget all about that.. Glencross/Beartschi/Gaudreau/Moulson/Dal Cole? really clogs up the left wing though.

I am assuming that Burke picks up a big defenseman this off season, my money is on Clayton Stoner.

I would like to see the flames make an offer for Callahan, as I think he fits nicely into the flames mantra of hard work and would also put up a few points. The flames are also needing players at RW.
I can see Penner being a Brian Burke type player in the bottom 6, and someone like Derek engeland as a replacement for butler, helping to bring a bit of size to the defense.

Definitely agree that there should be absolutely no long-term (3+ years) UFA deals signed and I'm not worried that Burke tries to do this.

Love the idea of Jagr coming actually, but I think he sounds like he's more open to staying in NJ next year.
