Gretzky and Doug MacLean to the Caps?
http://www.csnwashington.com/hockey-...caps-gm-search
Quote:
A source close to Gretzky said Monday that the 53-year-old native of Brantford, Ontario very much wants to be president of the Capitals and would consider former Columbus general manager Doug MacLean as his general manager.
However, the source said Gretzky has not had more than a few casual conversations with the Capitals and believes that if they really wanted Gretzky they would have hired him by now.

Two people that shouldn't be running a hockey team.
Right there.

Well at least that will spare us from a full 12 years of Doug MacLean on our broadcasts. Now it will only be 9 after he's fired in a few years for still being a tragically bad GM.

Do you think it's registered with Caps fans yet that they're never going to win with Ovechkin and this core?
God that's gotta suck.

I believe in the Jays.

Based just off his performace as a sportscaster and CBJ GM I wouldn't hire Doug MacLean to run a NHL franchise... not sure I'd even hire him to run a Burger King.
As for Gretzky... Meh, sure make him PoHO. Why not, so long as he doesn't hire himself to coach that should be fine.

If he wants Doug MacLean as GM, Gretzky may not be fit to work for an NHL team at all. Might as well hire Jay Feaster.

Jay Feaster is miles ahead of MacLean as a GM. If you hire MacLean you might as well hire ricardow and draft off the GRIT index.
But yeah if Gretzky wants him, you gonna have a bad time.

Jay Feaster is the only reason our drafting has improved dramatically. He's not as bad as portrayed and helped this franchise tremendously.
If we had a do-over I wouldn't change a thing.

Flames fans should know that feeling better than anyone.
Honestly I hope for the sake of Caps fans that this is just a rumour as while Gretzky as president is no worse than Linden in Toronto hiring MacLean would be a disaster. The guy has been out of the league for over 7 years for a reason. Think about how many hires have been made in that time and nobody has even looked to hire him as assistant. There's a reason for that.

It's similar for the Flames, but the Caps had a more talented team than we ever did during this last stretch of underachieving.

I don't buy that "building around Ovechkin" was really McPhee's issue. He brought in a lot of very good pieces for that team and they had a few years of legitimate chances at the Cup, but they were squandered. Backstrom is so far ahead of any centerman that Iginla had it's not even funny. Combined with Green, those three looked to be great core pieces a few years ago. Not to mention some good veteran prescence in guys like Chimera and Knuble and some utility guys like Fehr.
That team had it's chances, and it was Ovechkin who unplugged his own controller.

I'm not so sure about that. Iginla and AO are similar and Kipper is better than any goaltender they have had. Flames also had superior overall blueline for most years. The Caps had a better overall group of forwards but they have been buoyed by playing for years in the worst division in the NHL.

Whenever these management types get on tv for an extended period of time, you can often get a decent sense of the mans understanding of the game (and sometimes general intelligence). Watching a guy like Adam Oates over the last few games, he came across as smart and sharp. Watching Doug Maclean on the other hand makes one wonder how he got any job in hockey in the first place. There are people on this forum who I would trust more to run a team.
This is horrible, this idea.

The fact that Feaster was better at drafting than Darryl Sutter (and frankly, anyone else would have been too) excuses neither the god-awful signings and trades nor the smug, superior attitude as the franchise went to pot around him.
Regardless of the few things that went well under his watch, Feaster helped turn this franchise into the league's laughingstock, and the Flames are better off now that he's gone.
