Icon30 Panthers fire head coach Horachek

http://panthers.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=717069

Quote:
Florida Panthers Executive Vice President and General Manager Dale Tallon announced today that the club has relieved interim head coach Peter Horachek of his duties within the organization, effective immediately.

“Peter worked very diligently since taking over as interim head coach in November, but at this time we feel that a fresh approach and a new direction is needed behind our bench,” said Tallon. “We will immediately begin an extensive search for a new and experienced coach for our franchise, who will guide the Panthers to future success. We once again thank Peter for all of his hard work and service and wish him the best in his future endeavors.”

Horachek took over the head coaching duties for Florida on an interim basis on Nov. 8, leading the Panthers to a 26-36-4 mark. Prior to joining the Panthers, he served as the head coach of Florida’s American Hockey League affiliate, the San Antonio Rampage.

They should hire Sacco to ensure a bottom 2 finish again next year.

"New and experienced"

Good luck with that?

Edit: Oh, I'm a dumbass. Read it as "new" to the game of hockey. They of course mean new to them. Never mind.

Barry Trotz? He's use to the south and non-hockey markets. Sure fits the "experienced" part of "new and experienced".

They should hire Greg Gilbert. I don't know why.

I'm actually surprised it's taken them this long to make a decision in Vancouver. It seemed obvious to me.

They need a GM first. Then the GM fires the coach.

With both Trotz and Laviolette available, that was a good decision.

I would put money on Trotz being their next coach.

He has shown the ability to develop young dmen and build playoff teams around them. No coincidence that they are likely drafting Ekblad in a few months.

Throw in the offensive talent that the panthers are brewing, i think they may end up being my 2nd favourite team soon.

Florida is going to spend money this year too. I imagine they'll land a pretty high profile coach, as they now have a very strong prospect pool alongside the cash to compete. They'll be close to a playoff spot, if not a playoff team next year under the right coach in my eyes. Would be a huge "win" if they can land Trotz.

Tallon sure likes to fire his coaches. When does he stop getting a pass for having a bad team?

not very subtle:

George Richards @GeorgeRichards
#FlaPanthers Dale Tallon: Barry Trotz is one hell of a coach.

The best thing ever for Barry Trotz was getting released by Nashville; it is literally a buyers market for him.

Except that he is the seller.

Good offseason to be looking for a head coach. Trotz and possibly even Todd McLellan may be available as well as the usual suspects.

The bad thing about firing Mcphee is that the Caps don't have a GM to get into the Trotz sweepstakes. I think for a guy like Trotz that hasn't had a lot of talent to work with over his tenure with the Predators that the Caps job would be more enticing than the Panthers that have historically been a pretty bad team.
