Default Target opening in Canada, why is this exciting?

Wow, you closed a Zellers and reopened a Zellers under a new name.. It's the same store!

Target is much more of a serious threat to Walmart and Loblaws then Zellers ever could hope to be.

This will only bring good things to the market. As long as Safeway doesn't drop out of it though.

Nope, it's the exact same store as Zellers. When I go to one here in AZ it feels like i'm at Zellers in Westhills. EVERY TIME

As long as Target doesn't look like a dump, then it will automatically be better than Zellers.

Actually, no. It isn't the exact same store as Zellers. It is in the same category of department stores. Perhaps you've been confused by the fact that both brands use(d) red as a main component of their branding.

Target is like 1000000 better than Zellers.

Are you upset you didn't cash out your Club Zed points before you left Canada?

Target is slightly more upscale than Walmart/Zellers. The stores should be more walmart sized instead of Zellers sized, too. I believe that most former Zellers locations will be expanding a bit into Targets.

Plus Target has their own brand for household items that are generally pretty good. And money can be saved that way.

Thank you.... I have no idea why people are fawning over Tar-zhay.... Much was made about how their stores were going through a big makeover that was going to change the face of Canadian retailing.... but they still look like a Zellers!

BEFORE

AFTER

A few more exclusive house brands (ie Jessica Simpson) is going to revolutionize retail in Canada? Clearly I'm missing something, but then again, I'm not in their "target" demographic...

And now Target admits it will continue the practice of charging Canadians more for the same damn crap it sells to Americans, despite a dollar close to parity...

It's not the exact same but very similar. They sell the same brands of clothing that Zellers did, at least they did the last time I was in one, about 4 years ago (Mossimo, etc).

I liked them for other items - we never went to one in the US for clothes shopping.

Why are people excited about anything? It's new to them. It's different.

Same reason people get excited about new phones. Video game consoles. Movies. etc.

The excitement will wear off when people realize it won't be as good as the American stores.

Who's excited? In this thread, it's mostly people making fun of you.

Zellers stunk, they all literally had a stench. The stores seemed unkempt, frankly anything is an improvement.

Also, the Target's I've been to in the States are much cleaner than any Zeller's I've gone to.

The "Buyers" for Target seems to have much better taste than those at Walmart or Zellers.

Zellers was a disaster. We'd find ourselves at the one in Queensland occasionally and it was always like a bomb went off in the store. It had a Dollar Store vibe about it. The Targets I've been in have always been much nicer. I think it's a good thing for the communities where these stores are when a crappy place like Zellers gets replaced by a better place like Target.

As far as being excited about it...I didn't know anybody was.

They even had an episode in Top Chef where they had to make a meal out of Target supplies. A well ironed crisp grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup won.

Also the before picture must be at a brand new store. All the Zellers I've been to have yellowed stained floors and are a lot dimmer.
