Friedman's 30 Thoughts

1. The Capitals announced McPhee will meet the media Monday. A few execs from other teams believe he will exit gracefully, saying this is the right move for everyone. He'd been there 17 years and is ready for a new challenge. Oates released a statement and isn't scheduled to do anything else. That's usually a very different sign. He hoped to return and probably thought he would.

7. Sounds like Phoenix assistant Brad Treliving was interviewed by Calgary last week.

22. The NCAA now uses expanded video review, which makes it even harder to understand why the NHL (in conjunction with the NHLPA) can't get it done. Situations where college hockey uses it and the big boys don't: goaltender interference; if an attacking player was illegally in the crease and prevented the goalie from defending when the puck entered the net; and to determine if a goal was scored as a direct result of the puck deflecting off of the protective netting, by the first team to gain possession of the deflected puck.

Flames going with the big truculent defensemen for the GM position. 6'4, 225 in his prime.
Honestly though I don't know much about this guy, how much control has he had in Phoenix? At least we know he's been mentoring with a damn good GM in Don Maloney, looks like they were both brought into Phoenix the same year.

Treliving being a target would make sense in the light of the tweet that went out stating Burke had found his man. As of right now, he could have interviewed Treliving, Fenton, but guys like Benning and Futa would have been harder to get the OK to approach, as their teams seasons are not yet over

Dean Molberg @fan960boomer 4m
Based on texts & phone calls I've had the past few days, sounds like Brian Burke and the #Flames have found their man for the GM job.

So far from everything I have seen, there doesn't seem to be much interest from the Flames in any of the Leafs brass. There have been some media speculations that Burke would want to hire from there, but so far nothing he has said implies as much, and there have been no reports of any inquiries or interviews conducted by the Flames.
All told, I would be surprised if the position was filled by someone currently in Leafs management.

Pretty safe to assume that if Treliving gets the GM position, the Flames will have some new sponsorship next season including BPs and Mr Lube. :P

Pretty safe to assume that if Treliving gets the GM position, the Flames will have a leg up on the competition with strong ties to USA Hockey and Hockey Canada.
Not a bad place to to be.

I just looked up who he is. Son of Jim the BP mogul and asst. GM of Canada's world championship with 7 years in Phoenix and lots of experience.
http://coyotes.nhl.com/club/page.htm?id=32690
I think Conroy gets a shot as asst. GM.

Not sure if related to gm search or not but Brian Burke and ken king where on a plane from sanfransico to Calgary last night. My mother had told me they where sitting across from her on the plane, not to sure if for routine trip or for what it could be just found it interesting.

They were probably just taking the tour of Alcatraz. It's great, I would recommend it.

Interesting profile done by a Buffalo Sabres blog on Treliving when their GM search was happening.
