Default Oilers Hire Bill Scott as assistant GM

Still remain No Good.

The Edmonton Oilers have hired Bill Scott as assistant general manager.

Scott spent the past four seasons as GM of the Oklahoma City Barons, Edmonton’s AHL affiliate. The Barons made the Calder Cup playoffs all four years that Scott was in charge.

The "old boys club" continues. God forbid they go outside their organization.

how many times have we heard NHL management folk utter the words "surround myself with good hockey people"... You would think a rookie GM would aim to get someone who has NHL know-how, especially considering how idiotic he came across year 1 and in the end of year interviews, basically making it clear that he questions the sheer intelligence of the fans of the team.

Edmonton remains no good.

I'm guessing the interview process was something like:

Bill all we need from you is to say "great job Kevin/Craig I bow to your superior hockey intellect at the alter made of all your Stanley Cup rings! Can you say that Bill?"

"For six figures I can."

"you're hired"

What happens to Howson? Are they going to demote him again?

Really?

You think they would try to find some proven expertise from someone who has experience. No offense to Scott, but this is an idiot move.

I think that the Edmonton old boys club and refusal to go outside of the organization stems from mass arrogance, they so strongly believe that they can bring back the Oilers style of play from the dynasty years and they believe that everyone from Boston to Vancouver is doing it wrong and they don't want those new ideas.

Well the 80's style of hockey is completely dead.

But if you look at their current build.

Some really flashy top 6 players, no depth a mobile but soft blue line and terrible goaltending. Well that describes about 18 teams from the 80's.

Yes the Oilers were a very good team in the 80's but they were playing teams that were talent poor, thin on depth and had one eyed goalies. Kind of like the modern day goalies.

If I was an Oiler fan I would be looking at this move through a very jaded eye.

I still don't understand how Howson a guy that took a bad team and drove it into the ground is still working in the NHL. Probably because he looks good in Pajama's and Katz likes it.

I was watching Oil change last night and the lasting image to me was the Oilers draft table with Katz yaking away with Lowe, while Katz's goofy looking kid was sitting there in an Oilers jersey with a completely spoiled look on his face.

That organization is diseased and the Oiler fan base doesn't deserve it at all.

AHL coach. AHL assistant GM. AHL calibre team. They might as well make it official and just join the AHL already.

They just put names in one hat and positions in another and toss them in the air.

I have to say, this Edmonton's 'Old Boys Club' is becoming borderline incestuous.

Didn't play for the Oilers.

Something isn't right here.

So it's old boys club if they simply promote from their minor league club?

No doubt the cronyism has been rampant in the past and still to an extent in the present, but this isn't really the same IMO.

This move is neither bold nor stupid. It's just more meat shields added to buffer Lowe.

Bad year: Fire coach
Bad two years: Fire AGM
Bad four years: Fire MacTavish
by the time they get to Lowe, Everyone will have forgotten he works there.
