Reto Berra has signed a three-year deal ($1.45 AAV) with Avs
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=446183
The Colorado Avalanche have reportedly signed goaltender Reto Berra to a contract extension just eight days after trading for him.
According to Adrian Dater of the Denver Post, Berra and the Avalanche reached a three-year contract agreement on Thursday, which will be officially announced on Friday.
The Avalanche traded a 2014 second-round pick to the Calgary Flames last Wednesday at the trade deadline to acquire the 27-year-old netminder.
Berra posted a 9-17-2 record with the Flames this season with a .897 save percentage and 2.95 goals against average.
He has yet to appear in a game for the Avalanche.

They must really believe in Berra. He showed flashes of being a good 1B goalie but at times he looked lost and allowed weak goals.
Still a good guy so I wish him all the best.

Good for him, but giving him a 3 year deal 8 days in and without having him in your net once? Ok....

Good size and movement and one of the worst glove hands I've ever seen at the nhl level but good for him for getting a 3 year deal.

I thought that the trade was very strange, now this? What does Roy know that we don't?

They just traded a 2nd rounder for him and he's an UFA this summer so of course they were planning to re-sign him. Shouldn't surprise anyone.

It makes sense that they aren't letting him get to free agency as they paid a 2nd round pick for him and he hasn't been in the lineup so the trade would have looked pretty silly if they let him get to July unsigned.
Three years is a little on the long side given the jury is still out on him. That said he will be the backup so it's not like they will be depending overly on him.

I think Allaire knows exactly the same thing that Malarchuk knew.
Great potential, serious problems.

Well, one thing we know about Reto is that he has a great agent.

I find it very strange that they would offer a deal like that without playing him once first, guess they know something we don't.

Worst glove hand I think I've ever seen in professional hockey.
Maybe he can play softball this summer.

Apparently Allaire is very familiar with Berra. Allaire holds goalie camps in Switzerland.

On a 3 year term without seeing him in between the pipes on your team?
I'm not surprised they signed him, but the term and context raise my eyebrow.

Agreed that it makes sense that the Avs were planning on re-signing him. But 3 years? That has to be the longest deal out there for a backup tender. Good for Reto, I genuinely wish him the best!

I see it as being influenced by a couple of things:
1) they want to demonstrate to fans that they believe in this guy that they just overpaid for, and
2) the Avs operate on a pretty tight financial budget. If they can get a backup for cheap, they are going to jump all over it. If Berra is willing to sign for 3 years, then great - lock him up!

Berra is just taking over for Gustavsson in Allaire's stable of "best goalies not in the NHL but now in the NHL".
I the hope the deal is a million plus. Because that's about a million more than you should be paying for him.

They just paid a huge price to acquire him. Obviously they believe in him if they were willing to trade a 2nd rounder for him. The contract is consistent with what they traded for him IMO. I don't understand why people think he needed to play a game for them as if that somehow changes anything. They had already determined his value prior to the trade, they had scouted him. How do you think teams sign free agent goalies that have never played a game for them either?
The last time we dealt a goalie for a 2nd was actually a young JS Giguere

Exactly my thoughts. They're going to have some big contracts come due with a young elite core, need to save money everywhere else.
