RFA Thread - Guess their Future
Inspired by the Byron thread, the following guys are RFAs after this year:
TJ Galiardi
Ben Hanowski
Paul Bryon
Joe Colborne
Lance Bouma
Chad Billins
Mark Cundari
Olivier Roy
Joni Ortio
(Left out James Martin and David Eddy since I doubt either would be signed)
So... do they all get contracts? For the guys who get signed... guess the dollar figure.

I'd retain almost all of them. Letting assets walk for nothing isn't good business.

Ortio, Byron, Colborne, Bouma absolutely.
Considering we have a ludicrous amount of cap space, it;s roster spots we're worried about. TJ has trade value, so I don't see us stuck with him if we decide he's not a part of our future so I'm signing him. I also still see potential in Cundari and Billins, and we're not exactly flush with D prospects so I'm keeping them.
Hanowski, I haven't seen anything worth keeping and I know nothing about Olivier Roy.

Keepers in bold.
Galiardi can easily be replaced by Reinhart or Knight on the third line. Hell, even Arnold or Agostino could do a better job.
I really like Hanowski. He's a solid character guy. I just don't think you keep him around. He's an average AHLer.
Olivier Roy, again, nice guy, but I'm sure there are goalie options out there that could be a good backup to Ortio or whoever.
With Billins and Cundari, they're two good AHLers and decent fill-in options when injuries happen to the Flames. Plus, I love Cundari's game. He just plays so mean and I love it.

Galiardi was the one I was having trouble with.
He's basically had his worst season as a Pro hockey player. There's nowhere to go but up for him. That's why I went with a 2-way deal, one year, and see how he does.

wasting money on assets that are virtually worth nothing and have little or no chance of improving is also not good for business

TJ Galiardi ------------- NHLer qualify
Ben Hanowski --------- Good 1st pro season, qualify
Paul Bryon ------------- NHLer qualify
Joe Colborne ----------- NHLer qualify
Lance Bouma ---------- NHLer qualify
Chad Billins ------------ Good Abby guy at least, qualify
Mark Cundari ---------- Thought no for sure a month ago, but maybe one more year now?
Olivier Roy ------------- Need a back up farm goalie, probably better options out there
Joni Ortio -------------- Qualify for obvious reasons
Only guys I'm on the fence about are Cundari and Roy, rest should be qualified at least IMO.

That would obviously depend on whether you feel said assets have little to no chance of improving (ie my previous post on Galiardi).
I feel the majority of this group will continue to develop. Other may disagree, that's the fun of it.

This exactly, I remember when they did this for backlund and it worked wonders. There is potential there, lets just wait and see for a bit longer

Galiardi I've noticed does way better when he plays with good players I've noticed... but there are much better options than him on the top lines and he sucks on the bottom lines. He's a hard guy to figure out.

I don't understand why anyone would not want to qualify Galiardi.
I can understand if you don't want to keep him on the team going forward, because there is a ton of bottom six depth moving forward to take his spot.
But IMO, you still qualify him and then look to move him because he has value, you don't just let him "walk".
BTW, by value I mean a mid round pick, like what we gave up to acquire him.

I would let him walk because the Flames have people capable of replacing his contribution to the team and I am less confident that any team is going to give up an asset for him.
Not saying it would be awful to keep him, but the cap, contract, and playing spot could be used on more important pieces going forward.

Galiardi is an NHL'er. Definitely qualify.
Not his best season offensively (cheaper to re-sign?).
Extraskater.com suggests he is not as bad as some think.
Might trade him next year (for a 4th) depending on how younger talent develops.

yeah, I think you qualify Galiardi for sure. He didn't have a great year, but he is an NHLer. If he gets knocked off the roster, you try to move him for a pick.

Colborne , Bouma and Ortio are in for some good deals I think. You don't QO those three.
Definite QO's: Billins, Cundari, Roy, Hanowski.
I have to think Byron gets a good one way deal but that'll mean sacrificing Galiardi.
There's going to be a lot more hens in the hen house so to speak at next camp. I think the Flames can afford to let a few go via trade or simply to not offer a qualifying contract.
