First world problems - PVR'ing for not long enough
So I'm a bit new to the pvr thing but months ago had a pro tip to always record the next thing on tv to be on the safe side. However I notice that even regulation games always go over the 2h33! If you forget to record the next show at times your life is basically ruined (for the next hour or so).
This could be amalgamated with the snw broadcast thread or tech talk so I'm sorry, just really annoyed. I'm with optik tv. Any way to auto extend pvr? What happens in the playoffs? Will heartbleed affect this? So many questions

When it comes to live sporting events or award shows (Emmy's, Academy Awards, Gemini's etc.) always extend the time. Do the PVR extension manually for every recording especially in the playoffs. For those games, extend it by 2 hours.

Like i said, first world problems. It's just too much effort. The cable companies know it's being extended so why can't the PVR? Plus in my recordings i just want to watch the show in question. Throw this in the grind my gears I guess

Billion dollar idea my man - you just have to invent a cable company that actually gives a sh##.
Get back to me for my cut in a few years

I believe TiVo boxes can actually do something like this, but cable companies put an end to them for the most part so they could keep their monopoly on the boxes which is why every other tech object you own gets smaller and better while dvrs have UI from 1982 and look like they were built in 1992.

I'm with telus and I always extend the recording time by at least an hour.
What I do is go to Guide. Find what I want to record and hit info. Then on the left hand side you should see record episode, record series, and more showtimes. For me since it's a hockey game I go to record episode. Then the screen goes to a record info screen, tells me the channel it's on, the time... then 2 option that I can change. Stop recording, and save until. I go to the stop recording, hit ok, and select to stop the recording 1 hr after the scheduled end time. Then when it's all set up, I hilight record, hit ok, and bam.. the pvr will stop recording an hour after the game.
If you already have something set up to record you can go to your recordings page and go to see what's scheduled. Hit info on what you want to look at and then go to record settings and change it there... just make sure you save the settings

Too much effort to extend the recording by 30 or even 60 minutes? C'mon now...You can easily do this with most PVR's. My Shaw gateway allows you tro easily do this when you hit record for the event.
Too much effort...how do you even get out of bed in the morning?

I'm that guy that still watches some reality TV. And I have this problem ever single week with The Amazing Race, 60 minutes runs over than I don't get the end of the episode. So I've just started to blindly record whatever is on after the amazing race, and delete the recording after watching the first ten minutes.

I have the Telus TV app on my phone and that is how I schedule my recordings. As soon as I click record, it automatically gives me the option of how long I want to extend the recording. Haven't missed the end of a game since.

(on Shaw Gateway), set up a serial record on Sportsnet West and add a 30 minute extension. It will record every game on that channel, and will add the extension each time
You only have to do this once and you are set for about 60 games (it will also record Oiler games though)

I wish I could change the PVR settings from my smartphone on Shaw Gateway if I'm away from the house and forgot to PVR the game..
They really need to catch up with Telus and Bell with this crap...

Completely agree but the serial record solves 75% of that

I had been a Shaw customer for all of my adult life, and just made the switch to Telus last year. I am here to tell you, that there is not one single thing that Shaw does better than Telus. And I got a free laptop for signing up. TBH, it surprises me that Shaw still has customers.

Came here to suggest this. Way easier than doing it through the actual remote and cable box. Although if you do use the cable box, find the "set up a manual recording" option, and then you can specify the channel, start time, and end time. That way you don't litter up your recordings with whatever crap comes after the game being recorded as individual episodes - the manual recording includes whatever is schedules next in the one recording.
May your life get easier from here, but don't forget that CP is here for you.
