Default Something needs to be done about today's goalie equipment

Today's goalie (Ben Bishop) next to yesterday's goalie (Darren Pang). And we wonder why scoring has dropped. NHL to implement limit on body part sizes? Keep your giants out of our game!

Panger is also a legitimate midget.

Most goalies these days are 6 feet tall minimum.

The pads need to just cover the knee, and not the majority of the thigh. Padding in the thigh should be the shell stuff under the pants. Those pads are ridiculous.

Ya, I agree with this. No way they should be going that high on these guys, they are already big enough.

Even Vernon was pretty small. Heck Freddie Brathwaite looked pretty tiny and that wasn't really that long ago. Wasn't the origin of pads for goaltender protection? Somehow things changed where the padding is all about how much space can be taken away. I look at my brother's trapper today and compare it to what we used as kids it doesn't protect any better but it's massive in size. The equipment is so much bigger everywhere. Not sure why professional hockey bodies don't look into reducing the size of the equipment to it's original intention which was protection. Somewhere in the 90's the equipment started growing substantially. It's only going to get worse as athletes get bigger and better coaching.

Man alive. When Bishop is in position you must not be able to see even a square cm of net behind him. Crazy.

Why?

Is there really an appetite to bring back the old 9-7 80's-style hockey game with awful goaltending and terrible D?

Doesn't there have to be overlap or else there would be a gap when the knee is bent?

Smaller pads will result in terrible D?

What smaller pads would do is make a little more of the net available to shooters - I would welcome that.

I'm all for cutting that thigh part down and having it replaced with a smaller, harder thigh pad that covers the top of the knee when bent. Also ok with cutting the extra pieces off the gloves that aren't provided protection, just covering more space.

Other than that though, something I think people don't consider is there is more than just a need to protect the goalie from the puck now. Players drive the net and crash into the goalie way harder/more often than they every used to before, so the protection has to take that into account too. I'm actually always surprised by the lack of protection on a goalies back. If they ever got turned around and took a slap shot off the back, it could do some serious damage.

Ken Dryden with Bishop's pads in the 70's would have had a 0.50 GAA
