Cans aren't worth that much. I just leave em for the bottle pickers outside my place. It's the OJ cartons that are actually worth keeping now.

Just for interests sake, what did you used to do with them Jordon?

Beer cans can be 5cents or 10cents. Phone the depot first if that is an issue for you. The ones that are attached to a liquor store usually give 10, the other stand-alones usually give 5.

If you have a lot of beer cans it can add up. If you have ten flats, it's better to get $24 than it is to get $12.

And I thought the younger generation was more in tune with keeping the planet clean.

Remember, you're not recycling for the money. If you recycle all you can - tin, glass, cardboard, milk containers, and compost the organics, you'd be amazed how small your bag of garbage is every week.

You threw them out? What is this, 1965?

Anyhow -- what's the best way to get rid of batteries? I just took two out of a flashlight and I don't think it's best that they go to a landfill. Any ideas?

Why didn't you do that for the money before? Maybe if you did, you wouldn't be in this mess where you have to start recycling so you have extra money. :P

I don't know... I was just oblivious when it came to saving my cans, bottles. I'm a buying DVD addict and if saving bottles and cans can get me a DVD every month... why the hell not?

no kidding. we're a family of 4 with 2 kids in diapers (I know should be cloth, but there's a limit!) and due to recycling we've never had more than one (relatively large) garbage bag a week...several of our neighbours with similar sized families throw out 2-3x as much per week as we do

I believe that Ikea has battery recycling containers in most stores (look near the returns counter). I've also heard that Home Depot has something similar (but I'm not 100% sure).

Do they just throw out their bottles?

I am just a little amazed at how someone can be "oblivious" to recycling something as simple as cans and bottles.

We've never recycled our bottles and cans. I honestly don't know many people that do... Be amazed all you want.

You are the first person I've known that didn't recycle their bottles and cans to get the deposit back.

I think Battery World used to accept old batteries for disposal.

I'm often amazed at how lazy and unthoughtful people are with the amount of stuff they throw out instead of recycle. All it takes is a little extra effort. Paper, cardboard, food cans, newspapers, magazines, bottles. Get some containers, fill and empty them every week and you're helping out your planet. I don't think that's too much to ask.
