Default Clever Man Games Lost Site

could be a Fata, hope not.

Lots of discussion about rebuilding years, getting better or worse next year, etc.

Injuries have been a huge issue in Calgary this year, and this site really backs that up. They take the team reported man games lost stats which have always been dubious and then apply impact quotients to get an adjusted man games lost.

Takes out injury tallies for marginal players etc.

Flames sit 2nd in the league in impact injuries behind Vancouver.

Well, Glencross was basically expected to be a top line guy for us this season who could pot 25-30 in a full 82. So we could be looking at 15-20 more goals with him in alone. Then you factor in the Gio and Russell injury time, which hurt us immensely and contributed to our worst lull of the season (sorry Wideman).. Not to say we would be playoff-good without those factors, but it's very possible that we could be around where Vancouver is now (bubble).

Interesting way to look at it ...

I was seeing it more as a "everything hasn't gone right this year" angle to add to the career years from too many suggestion as to why they're worse next season.

I see both arguments though, to be honest.

Still think it comes down to UFA signings and culture more than anything.

I think its been beneficial to have some of our injuries to be honest. Not that I ever wish for someone to be hurt, but its kept us in the bottom third which should give us a decent draft pick moving forward and its also allowed a lot of young blood to make the show.

I'd hate to see this team on the bubble right now.

I disagree with both the idea that players will regress towards the norm because they had career years and the idea that injuries will regress towards the norm because that is something strictly based on luck.

I think that both of these things happened (career years, lots of injuries) because of work ethic and sacrifice. Objects in motion tend to stay in motion... Next year, we will have injuries in about the same ballpark and also lots of pleasant surprises due to the development pressure cooker that Hartley has created. I expect steady progress, and for the games to be meaningful further into the year.

I'm going glass half-full on this one. The injuries opened up opportunities for some other (often younger) players. This is something that has often been lamented in Calgary during Sutter's reign - the kids weren't being given a shot. Now we have Monahan playing 20 minutes a game (sometimes). I doubt we would have seen Paul Byron if there had been fewer injuries.

I definitely see positives come out of this season that wouldn't have been there without the injuries.

I was really looking forward to seeing some of the young players this season, and the injuries have allowed some prospects to get some game time. Brodie, Byron, Bouma, Backlund, Russell, Colborne & Monahan have all benefited from the increased icetime which may not have happened. Ortio, Reinhart & Wotherspoon have all impressed on extended looks, which they wouldn't have gotten without the extensive injuries. It's made this season more interesting, anyway!

I agree, if the Flames go out and sign, Cammaleri, Statsny, Quincey, and Iginla or Gaborik (which they do have the cap space for). All while managing to maintain the Culture they have developed this season. Than they should be expected to be one of the top 5 or 6 teams in the West next year, with lots of young depth to cover injuries.

If they bring in 3 or 4 more rookies and sign nobody, it would shock me if Backlund, Monahan, Colborne and Russel have a rough year. And the Flame are vary close to the bottom of the league.

My expectation is they will sign one or two notable FAs, and will be drafting in that 5-7 range again. I think with the hope that the next season is the year to make a splash. Once Backlund and Monahans lines have play a full 82 schedule with a high quality of competition.

But its a long summer, so we will see what happens.

The title of this thread confused me so much before coming in here...

Interesting post, I'm not sure what kind of difference it could have made though, pretty happy with how the season has gone truth be told.

5 or 6th in the conference right now is a 25-31 point difference and likely to be bigger at the end of the year you think the Flames can make up that huge of a difference just by those additions?

That still leaves us with below average goaltending in net and a lack of top line talent.

I know there is a lot of excitement with the effort this team gives but that is a very unlikely expectation even with the FA additions. Hard to see one of St. Louis, Anaheim, LA, Chicago or SJ falling behind us and that is without a team like Colorado or Dallas improving as well with their young talent.

I think if this team has Glencross full time next year along with Ramo-like goaltending night to night (not saying he's a godsend, but is slightly above avg.) I think were close to being a bubble team next year.

Really hope we don't go out and sign anymore than 1 veteran (like a cammy) to expedite this team to bubble status before ready.

Cautionary reminder that Oilers fans played that game for a while - several years in a row. Winning streaks after being eliminated, etc.
Gave rise to unfounded optimism. Not saying this is like that, but...
It looks very good, but patience grasshopper, a rebuild is not built in one year

Punctuation really threw me for a loop on this one.
