Default world cup tickets on sale now...better get your credit cards ready

So I was planning on going to a game. Looked today for tickets. Looks like 2 of the cheapest tickets run about 3700...guess I won't be going..

Are you serial?

I wouldn't pay that much for a SCF.

Well I might for a SCF but not a World Cup of Gimmicks.

The only way I would pay that much is if it was front row seats to a game 7 SCF in which the Flames were playing.

And even then....ouch. Fricken crazy.

The only way I would pay that much is if it came with the full Joe Thorton Experience!

If my two tickets came with $3700, I might think about going.

I assume it's for all the games??? If it is (which i assume) then it's about $130 for a game in the cheapest seats.

That would be pretty cheap for all 17 games I guess

I feel like you haven't followed the details of this tournament. Would that be correct?

The pricing is for a 17 Game tournament pass.

Cheapest seat is $1643 (including HST) and the highest is $7243.

I suppose $100 per game is not that bad. Initially I thought it was $3700 for two tickets to one random game.

I'm sure I'll watch when the time comes, but I just can't get excited about this World Cup. I know it's all about money/rights/business for the NHL, but I don't think supplanting the Olympics with this is in the best interest of hockey.

Depending on how well received it is though, it might be the best thing for the NHL.

Based on those ticket pack prices, you will probably be able to get in to the non Canada/US/ games for reasonable prices on the resale market, but anyone looking to go watch Canada play is going to get bent over and the scalpers won't be using lube.

It might be from a business perspective for the NHL, but I don't think it does as much in terms of building the game of hockey internationally, as the Olympics can. The Olympics come with built-in brand equity that fans and players alike have instant respect for. People of all types watch sports that they wouldn't regularly watch otherwise, which has potential to increase it's popularity (but of course, not necessarily profits for the NHL).

The World Cup of hockey on the other hand has random history and consistency. The best thing it has going for it is the name, as it piggy backs off of other sports tournaments. You're not going to get a lot of non-hockey fans watching, and I doubt there is as much passion for it amongst the players as well. I doubt Ovechkin would ever threaten to leave his NHL team if he wasn't allowed to play in the World Cup.

I get why the NHL is doing this, but in the end it's basically a business decision, not a hockey decision. The interests of fans and the game itself, is clearly not a priority.
