AMP Radio Burns $5000 in cash
What a pathetic radio station. I actually liked this station when they first came on air but after their pathetic valentines stunt and now this horrible stunt I will never tune in again.
http://www.calgaryherald.com/news/ca...243/story.html
Quote:
For five grand, 100 homeless people could receive shelter, food, medical aid and counselling for a night, potentially turning their lives around, but a Calgary radio station instead set fire to $5,000 in a stunt that has sparked outrage.
The cremated cash was the result of a contest by AMP Radio, which asked Calgarians whether it should burn or “bank” $5,000.
Voting on Twitter, Facebook, the station’s mobile app and by texts, listeners could have asked the station to give the cash away to anyone who participated in the contest through random draw, the so-called “bank” option.
Instead, 54 per cent of tens of thousands of listeners voted to send the cash to an incinerator. And the station obliged, posting on its Facebook page video footage of the bills turning to ash inside a crematorium.

Two things.
1. What was their Valentines stunt?
2. Isn't it illegal to destroy money?

Both are in the article I posted....but only coins are illegal I guess.
And the Valentines stunt is where they had two total strangers get married for a trip to a Miley Cyrus concert. They're now divorced of course.

Even more of a reason to avoid listening to the radio whenever possible.

Something tells me they didnt really burn it.... they would have done a video if they thought it was good publicity (which is isnt) and in the end they will have some emotional video on giving it to homeless people or a charity and saying that they "burnt through it" in the sense of spending it and that they would never burn it with fire.
EDIT: just heard on the radio, didnt know they had actual footage. My theory stands only the video showed fake money!

Didn't check video, but probably is fake money, make no sense to burn actual real money.
The radio may be trashy, but there are people voting for the option, or going through with the stunt such as this apparent Valentine's Day one. They're doing what gets attention.

What is the outrage? It seems they asked people what they should do with the money and they obliged. You could criticize how anyone spends their money.

It's pretty much a publicity stunt to get more listeners. The $5000 was burned due to the Votes of listeners and the next one is going to be $10000 and the final prize is $15000.

It's insulting to a lot of people that struggle with money. It's disrespectful.
Just because you can do whatever you want, doesn't mean you get to do it without criticism if you plan on doing it in public.
AMP is a trash station anyways, just endless stunts in order to grasp at some sort of relevance. How someone spends their money isn't even logically related to a radio station publicly flaunting the burning of money. Even the excuse that they just did what was votes for is garbage. They have the option, it shouldn't have been there in the first place.

So they did a publicity stunt in order to gain listeners. If they start to lose too many listeners they would have to fold and everyone there would lose their jobs.
If all of their listeners went and started listening to Cjay all that would do is make everyone who works at cjay richer, it wouldn't create very many more job.

I don't like the idea of burning money as much as the next person, as this money could have gone to better causes (as mentioned already)... but don't people 'burn' way more money everyday by gambling it away or spending it on frivolous things that don't matter whatsoever anyways? How is this any different, really?

That money stays in circulation though and is at least used to support certain industries.
Doing something like this only supports cheap publicity, unless your argument was about that.

It's definitely distasteful but there's a lot of other things to get upset about. A bit of faux outrage on this one.
Just think of it as $5000 being spent on promotions.
As for the people who think they didn't burn it, I have a feeling they did, at least from what I've read. No real reason not to. Could just screw things up trying to keep it somehow. Plus it is meant to shock, that was the whole point.

They could have at least been creative and tried to get a bank to back them given that they were likely burning paper money that is going to be replaced anyway... no money had to be lost.

There you go. PROMOTIONS. It was part of the Promotions budget and instead of printing t-shirts and throwing them off the Calgary Tower, they wasted it this way instead. Promotion money isn't used for charitable purposes. That's a different budget item.

Brilliant promotion, and interesting study.
It seems to me any anger should be directed at the people who voted for the money to be burned.

Puckluck, if anything, you should be mad at yourself. The money was burned because of people like you. The ones who post on Internet boards and say 'oh, you should give this money to the needy and not burn it'.
Except no one would give a crap if they actually did give it to charity. This gets people talking about the station and threatening to boycott it.
