Default Man stabbed trying to sell phone to stranger met on Kijiji

http://www.calgarysun.com/2014/03/24...hone-on-kijiji

Be careful meeting and selling your stuff to strangers...hopefully just a cover up story for a drug deal gone bad.

Quote:
Police say a 21-year-old man is in critical condition after being stabbed while trying to sell his cell phone to someone he met on Kijiji.

Cops received a call about 10:30 p.m. Sunday from the South Health Campus for reports someone had been stabbed, said Det. Torrey Killam.
“The victim and his girlfriend had attended an RBC parking lot in Shawnessy where they had arranged to meet someone,” he said.
The person they arranged to meet was someone he had met on Kijiji to whom he was selling his cell phone.
“He got into a vehicle with the purchaser and at some point during the interaction he sustained stab wounds,” he said.
The vehicle drove off and the man jumped out as it was driving away.
His girlfriend rushed him to the South Health Campus where the incident was reported to police, and he was then taken Foothills in life threatening condition.

I'm sorry, but he got into a vehicle with a complete stranger. Why couldn't this be done in the open? Stupid.

Everytime someone tells me that they're meeting someone to buy or sell something on Kijiji I ask them if I can have their stuff when they turn up dead.

I've had a friend that was robbed when he agreed to meet a stranger in a hotel parking lot. Another friend of mine in the states was pummelled and had his money taken during a sale.

Use common sense when your selling stuff on Kijiji, don't invite them to your house, do the transaction in a public place and don't trust a guy who wants to write you a check.

I always have a buddy with me at all times whenever I or he buys or sells something on Kijiji. It's always sketchy meeting someone you don't know.

I always stick to the mall. Plenty of people, lots of cameras and security. Much much safer than some parking lot in someone's car.

I want to thank the 5 or 6 CP members I've met over the years for not stabbing me.

I don't worry about it. Its so rare that someone gets robbed or hurt using Kijiji given the millions of transactions that occur everyday it ranks as one of those things where driving to a public place to meet someone is more dangerous than them picking it up at your house. In general strangers are great people and not sketchy.

This case seems to be a drug deal otherwise why wouldn't you just do it in the open.

edit: by robbed I mean physical robbery, plenty of people get scammed on kijiji.

There's an easy rule to follow:

Unless you're buying/selling a car or drugs, the transaction should never take place in a parking lot.

Why are you meeting somebody at 10:30 PM in a dark parking lot to sell them a cell phone.

Clearly a cover up for a drug deal.

there is more to this story for sure.

random crimes are random. It has nothing to do with Kijiji. If all the guy was after was a phone and some cash he could just mug any random person on the street. Why go through the hassle of contacting on kijiji and meeting up with somebody just to get a phone??. Just go on a street corner and mug the first person that looks remotely well off and you get your phone and whatever else they're carrying. I don't know how doing this over kijiji makes it easier for a criminal to get you. I could see as a seller, you sell something big and get the guy to bring a lot of cash then the buyer with cash gets mugged. But that's not what happened here.

I'm suspecting that the guy that got stabbed might not be telling the entire story.

With Kijiji sales I will usually meet them at a Tim Hortons parking lot. Likely going to be cops there.

Why not just meet at a police station? Wouldn't that be the safest location?

My Aunt makes a fairly substantial second income trading on Kijiji, even bought and resold a car! She lives in Winnipeg which has far more crime than here and has never had a problem.

I agree common sense and a degree of caution should be taken, but I'm not sure it's the problem it's made out to be.

Wait.

So selling a cell phone (probably stolen) to a complete stranger, at night, in the dark, and getting into that strangers car, is all a bad idea?

Who knew!?!?!

I've sold two larger items on kijiji and both have been positive transactions. One was a motorcycle and when I noticed the battery was dead I returned $100 to the buyer for a new battery. The other was a photocopier and fax machine and the guy was so appreciative that he actually voluntarily gave me an extra $20. If you're careful there is not big risk, but you must be careful.

I have sold a few items on kijiji and I would never schedule a meet that late in the night in an unpopulated area.

Kinda funny story. My sister in law woke up, she lives in Copperfield, goes to her garage and realizes that she left the door open. And then realizes that someone grabbed her new bicycle from the car rack during the night. The bike is a Canadian tire special for $149.

Her husband looks up Kijiji a couple nights later notices an identical bike was posted there for a quick sale. He confirmed that it was their bike, because of some scratches and stickers on the bars that he recognized.

So the two of them set up a meet with the seller. Really with no plan but with the intent to "steal" the bike back. It was 9pm, they drive to meet the guy, at his house. Luckily they spot a cruiser parked nearby. They tell the officer the story and he tells them he will follow them to the meet and park nearby. The husband meets the seller, sketchy guy, asks to take a test ride. Rides the bike over to the cop, and confirms that it is the right bike. Meanwhile the seller no ties the cop car and makes a break for it. But the cop caught up to him in his own backyard and arrested.
