i accidently started to install some form of malware on my computer - i thought i was downloading a book - when i realized it was some sort of malware i shut down my computer during the download because there was no other way to stop the download - the malware is called wiseconvert
i have taken the following corrective steps - first i have reverted my hard drive to a backup of my hard drive i made 3 days ago - then i updated microsoft security essentials and ran a quick scan - the quick scan found nothing malicious on my computer - i am now doing a full scan with microsoft security essentials
is there anything else that i need to do - will microsoft security essentials catch any malicious software that might be on my computer - reverting to my c drive backup likely fixed the problem but i am still kind of nervous
will microsoft security essentials catch any malicious software that might be on my computer
It may or it may not, lemme give you some links!
(these are all standalones and not like an Anti Virus)
Install and update Malwarebytes and do a scan see what it comes up with http://www.malwarebytes.org/mwb-download/
Superantispyware is another great tool, I like to have an assortment of programs because some catch what others can miss.
On a sidenote microsoft security essentials has pretty poor protection. I would suggest getting something like Avast(free), AVG(free), Kaspersky(not free), Bitdefender(not free)

I second malwarebytes. Had malware on my computer that wouldn't allow me to open Norton Antivirus and do a scan. Malwarebytes found the virus and removed it.
I actually had a malware on my computer... the only way I got my computer normally functioning is to back up all the data before my computer was infected.
If you don't have spybot installed, it's a good idea to install and run it for malware- you probably already have it but I have used it since I can remember and it's always worked well for me (free version). Good luck
Not that I have the right opinion I gave up on spybot years ago, (not that I have real virus issues ever) What I REALLY like about Superantispyware is it picks up and deletes tracking cookies/software that the others don't pick up on.
You can do a ccleaner clean for instance, also delete browser history ect and still have a few tracking parts.

Security Essentials only has "pretty poor protection" for people who expect it to play Internet proxy cop, and is only rated poorly by groups funded by Norton and pals.

I quit using spybot years ago when they got caught selling out. If I remember right, they took money to have some spyware/malware get through their detection systems. Havent trusted them since.

Not to mention it became unstable.
Another good one to use in combination with Malware Bytes is Spyware Blaster.
Update once a week or so and runs un-noticed in the background.

Microsoft said when Windows 8 was released that they hadn't put much development into MSSE in a while, so it was heavily lagging behind it's competitors.
That said, it automatically updates with Windows and is better than the annoyance caused by other free options 'expiring' after a year, with another chance to get you to shell out $30, so I still suggest it to people who are looking for a free option.

I use MSE along with the free versions of Malwarebytes and SuperAntispyware. I've tried most of the other free options and some paid. Every time I start thinking they are pretty good, they start doing some invasive actions on my computer and they are almost as hard to get rid of as a virus. I recently re-installed windows twice before I glommed on to what was causing my problems. They may say free but they want a part of you, except for the three I mentioned. This was my last experience with Avast.
