Who's in / who's out?
I'm bored and feel like typing a lot so here's a new thread:
For our rebuild, say the next few years, who should be in, who should be out and why:
Here's my take:
D:
- Gio IN - obviously
- Brodie IN - young and improving
- Russell IN - has sputtered a bit lately (playing with Butler) but I think he can be part of the future
- Wideman OUT - think his career is winding down
- Smid IN - tough guy can stay as 5th
- Butler IN - tough call on this one but he can stay as the 6th
- Wotherspoon IN - so far so good for a young defensive defenseman
G:
- Ramo IN - seems to be good enough until we can see if Ortio or Gillies emerges
- Ortio IN - off to a decent start, can be backup and challenge for #1 until Gillies comes around
- Macdonald OUT
F:
- Backlund IN, this guy gets better and better, going to be a big piece
- Monahan IN
- David Jones OUT, his role should be easily replaced
- Galiardi OUT, same as above, showing some speed lately but we have lots of fast guys coming up
- Westgarth OUT, blah
- Mcgrattan IN, great team guy, need one beast
- Cammallerri OUT but maybe sign him to a one or two year contract and try the trade deadline trade again
- Bouma IN, a young Yelle, love this guy
- Byron IN, i'm scared he might become awesome if we ditch him.. don't want to keep too many small guys though with Gaudreau coming up
- Hudler OUT, get something good in a trade for him
- Glencross IN, seems to be coming around + NTC
- Stajan IN
- Colborne IN, I think this guy has great potential too
That's 8 forwards I've kept.. Room for 4 for acquisitions and players like Granlund, Baertschi, Knight, Reinhart..
Seems like I've kept most of our D which might be a little concerning I suppose but the defense has really been coming along lately..
Oh and Hartley IN.
Interested in other takes..

I suck at this because there's so many guys on the team I love but obviously, looking at the standings, it doesn't work.

OK....I for one hope Bob, Gelly and Clouts are in and back next year and for years to come.
If the players keep getting these wins because they like playing this system and the coaches I really hope Mr Edwards doesnt allow Mr burke to simply let our coaches walk.
I think they deserve to be IN too.

Agree with all, except:
Keep Hudler for another season and a half. Trade him at the 2015/16 deadline.
Get rid of Glencross if he's willing to waive his NTC. I don't like his attitude and haven't for a couple years.

Galiardi, Westgarth, Jones, Mac and maybe Wideman are who probably should be replaced most. However, people are being way too harsh on Wideman, he's still put up .5 PPG despite the injuries, and you can't expect him to jump into a top 4 role and not miss a step with all the time he's been out. It's just been a bad year health-wise, and ridiculous to say from a couple small stretches between major injuries that his career is about done... He can be a good tie over piece until Sieloff comes in and replaces him.
One of Cammalleri, Hudler and Byron needs to go, unfortunately, as the team can't possibly go into the future with too many small forwards. Gaudreau will be an automatic player on our top 6 down the road, but he'll need to be surrounded by 'beef', and Huds or Cammalleri won't cut it. I'd love to just keep Byron if anything as the 13th forward long term, as he regularly seems to do great things out there with his energy and speed, and would be a great sub in when needed.
Hartley and co. have earned themselves another year, if not 2, to see where they can take the team with the effort and commitment they seem to be getting out of them more and more. Hopefully with better talents coming in the near future, the results will will be more consistently favourable.

Players that I believe will be in the opening day lineup (unless of trade/injury)
Forwards (9)
Backlund
Monahan
Stajan
Colborne
Glencross
Bouma
Hudler
Jones
McGratton
Defence (5)
Giordano
Brodie
Wideman
Smid
Russell
Goalies (1)
Ramo
*I could easily see Ortio being up with the Flames fulltime next year, but there is a possibility of Burke/Flames GM grabbing another goalie.
Players that will likely be in the lineup if brought back
Galiardi (RFA)
Cammalleri (UFA)
Butler (UFA)

Ortio is quickly on his way to earning full time backup duties next season, if not taking the starting role for himself with the consistency he's showing. He still has his weak moments, but he's looked every bit more promising than Berra (maybe less flashy) but for a reliable backup you want someone even keel and consistent so you can feel confident giving them the call when needed.

It's almost that time of year again...
Forwards: Re-sign Byron, Colborne, Hanowski, Bouma, Galiardi; get Jones & Cammy on very short-term deals (ie. 2 years tops) or else let them go.
Do not re-sign Street, Westgarth, Eddy.
Defence: Maybe re-sign Breen for one year.
Butler, Billins, Martin, Smith can all walk. Qualify Cundari & let him take it or leave it.
Goalie: Lose MacDonald, keep the others. Simple.
Returnees (barring offseason trades):
Cammalleri/ Backlund /Hudler
Byron/ Monahan /D. Jones
Glencross/ Stajan /M. Granlund
Bouma/ Colborne /McGrattan
Baertschi/ B. Jones / Galiardi
Giordano / Wideman
Brodie / Russell
Smid / Wotherspoon
O'Brien / Breen
Ramo
Ortio
Minors/Junior/College/Overseas
F - Agostino, Gaudreau (pending signing), Ferland, Elson, Jooris, Knight, Poirier, Hanowski, M. Reinhart
D- Ramage, Kanzig, Culkin, Sieloff, Kulak
G - Gillies, Roy

They arent all going to go OUT this year. It will happen over a couple of years. And most likely all the OUTS wont be gone and all the INS wont be kept.

1st Rd Pick - 5th Overall: Leon Draisaitl
Walk:
Galiardi, Westgarth
Re-sign:
Cammalleri @ 1 year $5.5M AAV - Flip at deadline to contender (hopefully Snow doesn't #### everyone over this year)
Butler @ 2 years 1.8M AAV - Keep him for now. He can either be flipped for an asset at a deadline if the offer is high enough, or we can let him walk season after next since Sieloff will be challenging for a NHL spot and Wotherspoon will be ready to take more minutes.
UFA Sign:
Jaromir Jagr @ 1 year 5M AAV - Size on the wing. RH shot. Solid veteran presence. 59 points (22G/37A) in 69 GP. Fellow countryman to Smid. Possible to flip at deadline if enough interest.
Plus we might have a few oddly placed jerseys in the 'Dome.
So really the chemistry of the group isn't messed with too much. Stempniak is replaced by Jagr, Galiardi by Draisaitl, both significant upgrades IMO.
2014-2015 Flames Lineup:
Cammalleri - Backlund - Jagr
Hudler - Monahan - Colborne
Glencross - Draisaitl - Bouma
Byron - Stajan - McGrattan
Giordano - Brodie
Russell - Butler
Smid - Wideman
Wotherspoon

Jagr shoots left. But signing him would help him on his way to playing for just about every NHL team.

D:
- Gio IN -
- Brodie IN -
- Russell IN -
- Wideman OUT -
- Smid IN -
- Butler OUT - much better 6th d men in free agency
- Wotherspoon IN -
G:
- Ramo IN -
- Ortio IN -
- Macdonald ABBY
F:
- Backlund IN,
- Monahan IN
- David Jones IN - Salary floor reasons
- Galiardi IN - Wont find a better 1 m dollar 3rd/4th line guy
- Westgarth OUT
- Mcgrattan IN,
- Cammallerri OUT
- Bouma IN,
- Byron IN,
- Hudler OUT,
- Glencross OUT
- Stajan IN
- Colborne IN,
Of course in my dream world, Cammy, Hudler, Glencross, Jones and Widemen are all guys who have shown potential as better than good players and are valuable at certain times. If we could re sign them all and deal them at some point for 1st rounders it sure would be nice going into the next draft with 5+ first round picks haha!

For a 26th place team, way too many of these guys are signed for next season. Especially on D.
Forward
Hudler, D Jones, Stajan, Glencross, Backlund, Mcgrattan, Monahan
Defence
Wideman, Giordano, Smid, Brodie, Russell, O'Brien
RFA
Bouma, Colborne, Galiardi, Ortio
That's 18 players. Sooooo, the 2014/15 Flames will pretty much be the 13/14 Flames. YAY.
But without taking into consideration contracts, I'd like to see the Flames move forward with Monahan, Glencross, Mcgrattan, Bouma, Backlund, Giordano, Brodie, Ortio and the rest I don't really care for.
As bad as the Flames are, one thing that they have going for them is that they don't have many really bad long term contracts. Pretty much just Jones and Wideman. Any chance that the Flames use a complacency buyout on Jones? I'd like to see them do it.

Everyone forgot about Baertschi already?
I think he'll be back. He's getting tough love. He was more or less handed a spot and did not respond well. He's getting similar treatment to what Backlund got. He's being forced to learn a complete game and put on some strength. Hopefully, he responds just as well.
