Default Friedman: The top 3 picks in the draft to be decided by lottery?

http://www.cbc.ca/sports-content/hoc...t-lottery.html

Quote:
Last season, the league opened up winning the No. 1 pick to all 14 non-playoff teams. Previously, only the five-worst teams had a shot. But no one feared moving down more than one position, meaning the 30th-place club could select no lower than second. That protection is in peril.

As we head towards a 2015 draft with two talents that have scouts drooling -- Jack Eichel and Connor McDavid -- the NHL is considering a system that could see the lottery going beyond just the No. 1 overall choice.

There are discussions about having the top three picks, or even the top five, selected this way. Although odds would continue to favour those teams with the fewest points, a decision to go in this direction would mean the worst team could potentially pick fourth -- or sixth.

Currently, the last-place squad gets a 25 per cent chance of snaring the top choice, with the best non-playoff finisher at 0.5 per cent. That may be different, too.

What we're looking at here is a system where the odds would be weighted by how positions 17 through 30 in the NHL standings finish over a five-year period relative to the final playoff qualifier. The exact formula is not yet determined.

Pretty damn obvious a lot of teams are unhappy with Edmonton's ineptitude and Colorado's throwing of a season.

Absolutely. The current draft system is woefully inadequate.

I like it and I like that it would be based on 5-year history too. I know it's not the best timing for these kinds of rules to be coming in for the Flames, but I think it's better for the league in the long run.

Once again, the Flames are one of the few teams who this severely hurts. Its like we are the RED headed step child of the NHL...

But im not surprised one bit..

I so desperately want the Flames to get a top 3 pick, maybe even two years in a row, but I can't cheer for them to lose. I was hoping they would drop in the standings but as I watch a game I'm still disappointed when they are losing. I'd love to see my team just barely miss the playoffs one year and still win a top 3 pick. Not fair for the team who intentionally sucks to get the top pick? How is that team being fair to its fans by not winning? Don't reward intentional losing. Don't reward a team who can't get it's ducks in a row. Reward teams who work hard and just need a lucky break.

would a system where picks 1-14 are all done by lottery? Why stop at just 3?

It does not hurt the Flames. They will never finish lower than 5 or 6 worst. Therefore they will have a better shot at top 3.

Take into account accelerators that reward teams that have 1-2 bad seasons and then get back in the hunt, and I think this is great for the Flames.

All they needed to do was make a team that picked 1st overall not be able to pick in the top 3 for at least a 3 year period.

The solution is so simple.

Agreed, for the short-term I could see this hindering the Flames a little, but it has to be done, not necessarily this particular suggestion but the draft system has to be fixed.

I don't care how it happens, I want to see the Flames draft in the top 3 before this rebuild is done. We've NEVER drafted top 5, even. How much is it to ask that we take a top player during our own rebuild, when teams like Edmonton, Florida and New York get to stock up on them yearly? It's stupid, ridiculous. I'm part in favour, part against this idea, cause it could either help or hurt us, and I just want to see us get a pick that we deserve for not throwing our season (or any of our recent non-playoff years, where we still fought until the bitter end).

On the other hand, if this keeps the Oilers from sucking more top talents into their black hole of a system and team, then all the better.

I can't see this hindering the Flames much. If you totalled the last 5 seasons (including this one), how many teams have been worse than us? 5-8?

It can't be too many

Why does everyone assume the Flames will be last next year? if anything I see them improving.

Anyway I think its the right call, I hate tanking and the idea of tanking. Flames put in an amazing effort in Dallas on friday and people I talked to around town were saying things like "they cant even lose right" its an epidemic

Can we at least make sure the lottery is done in the open, and not behind closed doors? I still think Pittsburgh getting Crosby was just a little too convenient.

Those fans want to see the Flames win the Stanley Cup one day, not just put in good efforts while failing to make the post season.

One top pick should be plenty to build around.

I actually think this has more to do with McDavid being in next years draft. The NHL don't want to see half of the teams going for the big drop in effort to try and secure that #1 pick.

I'd laugh my ass of if Colorado misses the playoffs by two points next season and then wins the new lottery.
