Default N. Korea vows to end Korean War cease fire...

Quote:
North Korea vowed Tuesday to cancel the 1953 cease-fire that ended the Korean War, citing a U.S.-led push for punishing United Nations sanctions over its recent nuclear test and ongoing U.S.-South Korean joint military drills.

But Kim Jong Un and Obama both like basketball! I thought Rodman was definitely going to wedge them closer together with basketball.

Dennis Rodman is the last person that should be evaluating whether someone is a good guy and sane.

The Kim family from grandfather to son to grandson are not stupid, they're probably the best trained political animals that the world has seen. They understand the game of brinkmenship and play it well to get what they want.

Frankly no one is going to get their skirts in a knot about the end of the cease fire because North Korea's army would get absolutely pounded by the South Korean military even if the States decided to sit on the side lines.

About the only threat that the North Korean's have left is their artillary belt within range of South Korea, but young Kim understands that the minute that he lets that genie out of the bottle that his time in the lap of luxury and rule would end very quickly.

I remember reading a quote by Madeline Albright who talked about Kim Jong-il and stated that he was crazy like a fox.

Everytime he sneezed he got concessions.

The son is following the same playbook and doing it after getting some good will by Rodman.

He might be young at 23 (I think) but he's saavy enough to play the military against the Intelligence services to keep himself and his family members in power, and he's saavy enough to know that threats = money until someone tells him to get stuffed.

He has the new threat though that his dad and grandpa didn't have to deal with and that's a China with huge global stability concerns, who are sick and tired on NK's crap.

Does this mean a potential M*A*S*H sequel?

All that Rodman visit did was demostrate in this guys' already closed mind, how "dumb" the West must be to hold some nutcase like Rodman in higher regard.

North Korea threatens everyone with everything. I don't know how many times the U.S. has been threatened with a "nuclear hellfire" or South Korea with a "bloody, raging war". It's like the boy who cried wolf. They just want to stay relevant on the international scene.

Kim Jong-eun is not as stupid as his dad - and definitely more pacifist. It's his surrounding military entourage that generally put words in his mouth, most of whom are scared to toe the party line for fear of execution. Kim Jong-il has done that before with senior leaders.

you're making a big assumption here with not much to back it up. Kim Jung-un ordered the artillary strike on the South Korea Island and he was responsible for the sub attack on the South Korean Frigate, these acts were actually done after Kin Jong-Un adopted the title of party central and named Marshall in the Military.

I just read a really excellent book on North Korea that discusses the grandfather, the father and the Son, I'll put the title up when I get home tonight.

Kim Jong-Il was the furthest thing from stupid, he consolidated power in a far more ruthless manner then his old man, got rid of the Chinese supporting faction in the government and heeled the Military and Intelligence groups to his family's direction. He was a pretty saavy player who had a bigger ruthless streak then his father.

As much as we want to say that the son is a pacifist and a reformer he's not, he's still spending lavish amounts of money on himself and his close friends and family instead of dealing with the starvation of his people. He hasn't reformed the Gulag system, if anything he's increased the population in the Gulag to increase production.

He's continued the nuclear weapons program and the ballistics weapons programs.

He was trained at the knee of his father was far more ruthless and ready to lead then his brothers one who's a suspected homosexual, and the other who tried to sneak into Japan. His sister who is now running the security apparatus was a cut from the old mans jib but she was a woman and never had a shot at power.

The kid is just as corrupt and uncaring of anything but his own wealth and power as his old man.

They are full of it. All they want is more aid (ransom) money from the United States. They do this every time their coffers run dry.

If they really had a plan for "surgical strikes" aimed at unifying Korea, they wouldn't be advertising it to everyone. It would start with a sneak attack.

Obama should call up Kim and just say let's do this thing and settle it once and for all. I guarantee you Kim would change his tune.

Sorry Cap, but Jong-un, more than his dad, does not want any military hostilities with other countries, no matter how brutal they are to their own people. On the international scene, North Korea is doing what it's always done - defy UN protocols on nuclear containment, threaten neighbours with war, and take the "backed in a corner" approach. However, much of this is dictated by his military administration, who in all likelihood are speaking into Eun's ear on a variety of topics. Eun, much like Jong-Il, relies on his supporting cast for policy direction. I don't think Eun becomes a five-star general in his own army without having his best military advisors speaking into his ear.

And as a note, Jong-Eun has had issues reining in his own military, which have become too powerful on their own. Last November, Jong-Un reshuffled the cabinet, including demoting six corp commanders, and demoting Kim Yong-Chol, the General responsible for sinking the South Korean corvette ship Cheonan. He has also been relatively vocal recently about raising the living standards and establishing a better economy, even saying that the same effort they put into their nuclear program must be put back into quality of life for North Koreans.

And just for kicks, even Denis Rodman proclaimed that Jong-Un doesn't want war! (Basketball diplomacy: a new 21st century approach).

Interesting I had read about the mini purge in the Military when the kid took power, but I'd also read that the officers in these cases were demoted or dropped because they were just not well liked by the family.

Until Kim turns word into action I have trouble as seeing him as a pacifist or a reformer, remember that Kim Jong-Il mouthed a lot of the same platitudes when he took power and stopped the use of the Jouche (sp?) concept of North Korean self reliance and to open themselves up to business with the world. it was a delaying tactic to gain him hero worship by the people and get time to consolidate power and flush out the "doves"

There were also purges of the government under Jong-Ol similar to what jr is doing.

He hasn't stopped the practice of spending the countries hard reserves gained through weapon sales on lavish gifts for his friends and family members either.

That special little room in their finance ministry is still churning away.

I'm not really arguing with you, you seem well informed on North Korea, but I'm skeptical as the torpedo attack and artillary attacks came after Jong-Un assumed the rank of Marshal at the head of the North Korean Military and rumors continue that the attacks originated with him in order to gain favor with the Military.

Hopefully Kim Un takes a softer approach, and takes a page of of Nenshi's book - ruling with an iron fist, but being an advocate for the:
- Arts
- Food Trucks
- Civic Engagement
- Public Transit
- Secondary Suites

Heh the arts aren't a problem in NK, between their elaborate public ceremonies, Hundreds of statues and paintings, and massive movie production and opera's the arts are fully covered.

Food Trucks? What are they going to serve rocks and grass

Civic Engagements, well nobody but the entitled live in the city.

Same with public transportation.

Secondary Suites, lots of those in the Gulags.

Sounds similar to the Khmer Rouge, keep the educated population out of the cities. Not sure if NK executed them like they did though.
