Can the Flames catch Vancouver?
The Flames have 19 games remaining and are playing fairly well recently.
The Nucks have 17 games and have been dreadful.
The Sedins are out and the nucks have no depth in their organization.
The Flames are now 9 points back of them. Could they catch them?
Wouldn't that be hilarious.

We could but I don't think we will. I want them to wallow in the limbo we were in for a few more years ... or a dozen more years.

It would make me kind of sick to see the Canucks and the Oilers draft ahead of us.

No
The last two wins have been fun to watch but they were against two brutal Eastern teams, one of which threw the game away.
As we saw last year there will be some fun games where the kids win and we can get excited about the future but overall the team will still suck and will unlikely to have gain 9 more points than any other team in the league from now until the end of the season, let alone a Canucks team that seems to be trying (although obviously not very well) to make the play-offs.

Because them getting better players would be a bad thing going forward.
I personally always want to see them finish 9th and 10th in the West preferably ahead of the 9th place team in the East.

I wouldn't count on the Flames winning enough to get ahead on their own, but it wouldn't surprise me to see Vancouver lose enough to wind up behind us

Flames will do well to finish at a .500 points percentage. Meaning 19 points on top of their current 57. Vancouver would need to finish with 10 or fewer points in their remaining games. Something like a 4-11-2 record. So they would really have to suck it long and hard for the Flames to catch them.

How much has getting better players helped the Oilers? I don't disagree with them ideally finishing 9th or 10th, but I will always enjoy beating the Oilers and Canucks over getting a better pick.
Drafting is important, but being the only team out of the three in a rebuild and STILL finishing above both of them is priceless.

The only thing I'd like to see more than the Flames getting the 1st overall pick in the draft is them finishing ahead of Vancouver.

It isn't helping the Oilers but seems to look pretty good for the Pens and Hawks.
I doubt the Avs are all that upset about having MacKinnon this year.
Laughing at the Oilers and Canucks is fun but I would rather win the Cup than just be slightly better than them and you do that by getting elite level talent at the top of the draft.

I'd enjoy the Canuckleheads to finish 9th, miss the playoffs, and get the lowest draft pick possible of the non-playoff teams.
I'd also enjoy the Oilers finishing 1 point ahead of the Flames resulting in Calgary getting the better draft position yet the Oilers fans bragging about how much further along in their rebuild, in year 7, is compared to the Flames in year one.

Man if the Nucks draft ahead of the Flames this year by a couple slots, move Kesler for some young blue chippers and are really bad in the McDavid draft next year they could slingshot past the Flames rebuild in 16 months, scary stuff.
Win some games Canucks! (just start right after tonight)

yeah that would be great
winning culture > draft picks
look at our roster tonight, do we really need more youth? I'd rather they focus on progressing together as a team than picking up a higher draft pick. Pittsburgh has the best player and they probably won't win the cup.
Don't care about draft spot. We have top 5 mentality in the league right now, few teams put forward the effort we do every game. That's more valuable than drafting a few spots higher. The pride in not getting disheartened and always working hard makes it an easy team to cheer for.

Flames will catch Vancouver.
Flames will be a contender in three years despite never drafting better than 6th.

You take that mentally tough team and winning culture, I'll take Crosby, Toews, Malkin, Doughty and Price and we'll see who wins.
That "top 5" mentally tough team looks to be getting us two bottom 5 finishes in a row. Meanwhile Colorado are riding top 3 picks Duchene, Landeskog and MacKinnon to a play-off spot this year and bigger things likely in the future.

They're 4-12-1 in their last 17, so anything's possible.

well this is blatantly wrong, they've only began to gel as a team in the past few months. Compare this team in the first year of a rebuild to how most teams do in the first year of a rebuild. The team has had drastic turnover so they really aren't the same team as last year, also doubtful they finish bottom 5 again.

Why is it doubtful?
They are comfortably in a bottom 5 spot right and haven't shown the ability to get the amount if points needed to pass the teams ahead of then. It is possible they don't finish bottom 5 but far from doubtful.
Also they have only started gelling the past couple months but are already top 5 mentally tough teams in the league? That it pretty damn impressive.
Just out of curiosity when was the last team that was mentally tough and had a winning culture but not elite talent to win the Cup?
