Any goaltending controversies in recent Flames history?
I was curious to know if there were any goaltending controversies for Calgary in the last 20 years. Was there a goalie that had superior win %, save %, and GAA, etc riding the bench, while an inferior goalie repeatedly got the call to start?
I ask this because I cannot, for the life of me figure out why Pavelec keeps getting nearly all the starts in net for the Winnipeg Jets, despite the fact that Al Montoya has been far superior in net all season, in nearly ever category.
There is nothing more frustrating than watching a netminder shut down a team like the Chicago Blackhawks, then watch him sit on the bench, while the team loses to Nashville the next game by 4 goals. Has something like this ever happened in Flames history? Just curious....

Nobody cares about the Jets.
That being said, no, it has almost never come up. Either we've had a fantastic #1 and nobody even close to challenging them, or we've had several journeyman type options to choose from and usually have ridden the hot hand (think back to Tabaracci and Brathwaite). Never been a controversy in my recent memory.

Can't think of one.
The "Young Guns" days just saw a lot of mediocre goalie tandems come through but I wouldn't call that a controversy.

We should have asked Kiprusoff to retire instead of Turek.

Well for the last decade we had Kiprusoff, who was phenomenal and always had weak backups - Toskala, Joseph, Mclennan, Mcelhinney - so obviously not.
Before that we didnt really have any quality goalies so it was just a tandem.

There always is when the starter sucks. When Kidd was emerging into the league, and Vernon was still the starter there were those who felt the team should be playing Kidd more. Previous to that when the 92 team melted down, some felt Jeff Reese should play over Vernon. Once Vernon was traded, there eventually was an argument for Tabaracci over Kidd....eventually becoming the era where there was no real starter between Ken Wreggit, Dwayne Roloson, and Tyler Moss, eventually adding in Freddy Brathewaite and Mike Vernon again.
Really for all the flack Turek took he was at least a bonafide starter, and eventually replaced with a better one in Kiprusoff. Today there isn't really a true starter in place, but not really a controversy because...well the team is sort of in a phase where they're trying to find players.

Pavelec has 5 years of starting goaltender experience and Montoya has 0 years experience as a starting goaltender? The only time Montoya came close to playing regular games was 2011-12 on the Islanders backing up Nabokov.

IIRC, Reggie Lemelin losing the starting spot to Vernon. At the time it seemed more like a natural progression than a controversy though.

Just a little perspective.
I would say Kipper vs Turek kind of was a controversy, but I beleive Turek was hurt when Kipper was brought in.

Turek went down, Flames were rolling with McLennan and Sabourin. Kipper came in, impressed. Turek came back. McLennan was traded, and Flames rode hot hand the rest of the year.
