Default Do employers have access to your work history?

A little bit of background on this question.

I lied on my resume to hide 2 months of work that just didn't work out for me. I recently got a great job offer somewhere, but now I'm unsure if that lie will come back to bite me in the ass.

So can an employer use my SIN to do a background check to see that I lied on my resume?

If you got an offer, don't you think they have already don their due diligence?

Nowhere does it say a Resume has to include ALL of your work history. If they've made an offer, you're good.

^^ That's what I'm thinking. But at the same time, I haven't provided them with my SIN yet. Do employers have access to your Record of Employment forms that Service Canada keeps in their database?

Nope. You're good. That information is between you, your previous employer, and the government.

Dude, was the 2 month job as a drug mule?

I think you are over worried about this. If, IF, they bring it up, which I can't see them doing, if the answer is reasonable, what is the issue.

"I didn't put it on because of the short time I worked there"......

What was the lie? Seems you should be able to leave off a job without lieing about anything? Did you pad your time at other jobs to cover up the gap in employment?

Yeah that's exactly it.

Adding two months to a previous employer plus the time I was unemployed. So it's padding of about 4 months or so.

Definitely doesn't matter.

If they had wondered about it, they could have asked you. Leaving non-pertinent information off a resume isn't a problem. The resume is to sell yourself, so naturally you are only going to put things on there that matter.

That's nothing.

You're a good guy if a slight padding is what you're worried about.

I am a HR Rep and I have never heard of such program. Only people who could really see any type of info I would think are Service Canada who can see your Record of Employments, that is assuming you we'rent getting paid under the table.

A resume is intended to highlight your skills, experience and acheivements. Its not meant to be an exact accounting of where you've spent your time.

Its perfectly fine to leave jobs off that aren't applicable to the one you're applying for, and those of short duration. Just be prepared to explain the gap if asked. Few employers will bat an eye at a gap of a few months or so.

Gaps of oh, say 18-24 months make me wonder if maybe you were locked up somewhere.

Employers can't check up on you using your SIN. Only the government can do that. You haven't applied at the government, have you?

I don't think you'll see that here. Everyone lies to some extent on their resume.

Besides, it's not like one can lie about major education, training, or such (without being a serious con artist I suppose). If your terribly unqualified, it comes out very quickly.

Just don't let them figure out your CP user name. They will know for sure then.

Thanks for this. It's definitely not a government job, but it's with a large multinational corporation that also has hired a company called HireRight to do a background check. Does anyone have experience dealing with those guys?

If I do get the job I plan on never signing in to CP again from work

Yep, we don't have access to those records.

But just keep in mind, if you want to pad up time you've worked at a previous employer, and try to use them as a reference, you might get burned.

I know in my reference checks, I always make sure the dates of employment stated on the resume add up.
