Default Burke does his homework. Has a hockey trade in the works?

http://www.calgaryherald.com/sports/...medium=twitter

Quote:
“I’ve talked to all the GMs. I know what teams are trying to do. I know what their capability is cap-wise,” Burke was saying in his office Tuesday before kicking up his cowboy boots at the Flames’ annual charity poker tournament across Olympic Way at the Cowboys Casino. “We’ve done all the work internally. We’ve already figured out which teams will make the playoffs, which teams won’t make the playoffs.

“Now, we’re ready to see if something makes sense for us.”

Quote:
“I think everyone is focused on the guys with expiring contracts,” he said. “But we’re open for business for hockey deals, too . . . I talked to a team (Monday) about a pure hockey deal, it didn’t involve any rentals.

Hartley breaks up a fight during practice:
http://www.calgaryherald.com/sports/...779/story.html

Quote:
“It’s like two brothers fighting for the Tonka truck in the sandbox,” joked coach Bob Hartley, called upon and step in and play referee after defenceman Chris Butler and centre Matt Stajan — two unlikely choices — got involved in a mild brouhaha in the midst of Tuesday’s practice at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

“Right now, we’re telling them ‘Playoff mentality. Playoff mentality.’

I really like that Kisio is on the radar for the Flames' vacant AGM.

Also, Granlund is Finnish, not Swedish!

From the first article -
Quote:
As for Bob Hartley and the team’s coaching staff, Burke gave them a solid passing grade.

“Teams go through four phases,” he said. “They crawl, walk, run, then sprint. The last phase is the hardest phase, when you’re actually in contention and trying to add one piece and take a run at it.

“For us to get to the next stage — which is walking because we’re crawling right now — we need two things to get to the next level. Work ethic and buy-in and we’ve got both those things in place . . . those two things are directly related to the group of coaches.”
I think the writing is on the wall for Hartley. It seems he has the blessing of Burke to get the team to the "running" phase. But I doubt sincerely he's the man for the sprint phase. But at least the man is secure for the time being. Though I don't like some of his in-game decisions, he is seemingly relentless in game preparation and training. Good stuff for early on in the rebuild.

Curious as to why you think he would be the one that's traded.

I have the same feeling to be honest. Just doesn't seem like a Burke player.

With the Flames offering Cammy a new contract and our depth at LW it makes sense. (If Cammy re-signs)

If Cammy re-signs, we would have Cammalleri/Glencross/Baertschi/Gaudreau/etc pushing for spots.

Hudler has been playing RW though.

I can see Huds getting dealt, because it makes no sense to a person who values skill and finesse. Burke wants more jam and grit, and isn't afraid to make a big splash. And if Cammy gets signed, you can almost bet on it. Hudler is very non physical, and gets involved less than Cammy does. If Burke is going to be looking at potentially Cammy (if signed) and Gaudreau both on the future roster, then another undersized forward has to go.. aka Hudler.

I like Hudler and want to see him stay, but I agree with others here and wouldn't be surprised to see it happen.

That makes sense. If it was me i'd trade Glencross as i'm not a fan of his inconsistant play.

Now would certainly be the time to deal Hudler if you don't think he's part of the team when they're ready to contend.

His value is at an all-time high.

Sorry if it's been posted, but does Hudler have a NTC/NMC?

I hope not, it never hurts to have a few Czech Veterans around for a rebuild.Like Jagr in Philly and Hamrlk with Phaneuf. Hudler seemed to be doing to the same thing for Monahan from what I read in an article earlier this year

Exactly this. Hudler is on pace for the best year of his career so why not capitalize on that if there is the possibility of getting a key piece for a rebuild in return.

He's not a rental, he has a reasonable if not favorable cap hit for a couple more years and he doesn't have a NTC or NMC to impede anything. Right now other than Giordano (who shouldn't be moved), Hudler has the most trade value.

Keeping Cammalleri over Hudler? That would be an incredibly stupid move. Cammalleri is the type of player Burke wants to move away from. He's small, plays smaller, is injury prone, and is moving into the twilight of his career. I also believe he's a bit of whiner, especially after his departure in Montreal. I think the team will be better without him. Hudler is small but plays bigger. He's a positive role model and does everything the coach asks him to do without whining. He's a veteran you want the young kids to learn from. I wouldn't be disappointed to see both traded, but if one is kept there is only one choice, and that's Hudler. I'd take whatever scraps you get for Cammalleri and just move on.

A bit of hyperbole there with the negativity on Cammalleri especially with the bolded part, no?

Hudler doesn't strike me as the type of guy interested in a rebuild. He is in the prime of his career right now, spent a lot of time on a competitive Redwings team and when he signed here this team had Iginla and Kipper. They were also trying to make the playoffs and win a Cup.

By the time this team even starts to get competitive his contract will be over and we risk losing him for nothing/deadline deal. I would love to keep him as a mentor, but if someone is willing to part with a partially developed and promising forward for a in their prime trained by Babcock and the Detroit system winger Burke should do that deal. His value will never be higher than it is right now.
