Default South of France Travel Tips, Ideas & Experiences

Didn't see a thread specific to this area; there is one on Paris.

We're planning to go end of May, early June for about 12 days.

Any Travel Tips, Ideas & Experiences appreciated.

Will be going to Montpellier and Grande Motte in September. Going to be competing lots, so might not see too much, but if there's something I absolutely should not miss....?

Montpellier has a good Top 14 team.

You should try to catch a game. I understand that it is a great experience.

Lived there (Castellane, near Grasse) ten years ago and recently had a two week honeymoon there.

My advice:
-Read Rick Steeve's travel guide to Nice and the Côte d'Azur.
-Rent a car. Scary as hell, but worth it. Beautiful drives and lots of little towns.
-Get a cheap Sim card for your phone there. Relatively cheap data and use Whatsapp to keep in touch and send photos
-Visit little towns in the mountains. Lots of cool mountain towns
-Visit old town in Nice. So many cool treats

We spent 6 days in Avignon two summers ago - great town, but 6 days was too long. I'd suggest 3. We did one mini-bus day tour of Arles, Orange and Chateauneuf du Pape, it looked like you could spend a whole day in Arles no problem (they have a large amount of Roman era ruins), Orange wasn't great and CNP would be great if you had a DD to do wineries. Plan accordingly if you intend to drive to/from Avignon - the roads inside the walls are crazy crazy narrow and parking is minimal if not non-existent.

I have never been to France, but I have used the Rick Steeve's books in other countries and find them better than Lonely Planet. They are really good books.

If you are staying in one place for about a week look at a vacation rental.

Lots of options in that area, I managed to get a 2 bedroom one with a view of the beach and next to the opera house for a very reasonable price in Nice.

Nice also has a very decent bus system that will take you to the majority of the places and nearby towns (e.g. Monaco) and sights.

so jealous, my advice is to hit every market you see - the quality is amazing.
Prices have gone up a lot in the last 10years so be a little picky when eating out - for the general quality you'll likely be getting its still utterly worth it!
In Provence their Rose wine is generally amazing at low low prices but the reds were rough.

Oh and check out the Gorges De Verdun, you may be lucky to see the Lavender fields in bloom in May - just take a very deep breath if you drive the mountain roads there!!

My favourite place in the world i reckon...

For vacation rentals, is VRBO the way to go in Europe or are there other similar site recommended?

+1 on Sarlat, beautiful place.

I thought Cahors was worth a passthrough but didn't enjoy a second day.

Thought Bordeaux was really nice as well.
