Lane MacDermid retires from hockey
Pat Steinberg @Fan960Steinberg
The Lane MacDermid situation got a little clearer. He's officially filed his retirement papers, according to Craig Conroy. #Flames

Conroy told us MacDermid had lost his passion to play, so is moving on from his hockey career. #Flames

Probably realized his best chance of making it as a pro was to spend the next 10 years getting punched in the head, and that career path isn't worth the myriad of problems it'll cause once he retires.
Wouldn't be shocked to see more players like MacDermid calling it quits soon.

So who is going to start the Lane MacDermid appreciation thread? I appreciate the fact we wasted a 6th round pick on him.

There's a 99% chance the guy we would have drafted with that 6th pick will never play an NHL game so I'm not too upset we traded it.

It's gotta be tough for guys that spent their teens as the best players on their teams to be told that they're nothing more than a face puncher now, that the only way for them to keep playing is to drop the gloves twice a week.

Well, we traded Jackman for negative 25 spots in the 6th round.

Dammit. I'll always remember him for picking a fight and 'accidentally on purpose' running Giguere over and ticking Giggy off.
While their defenseman had the puck behind the goal line, lol.

Hey at least we are down one contract now. Maybe that will come into play for trade deadline.

Imagine how many gems we'll miss out on, Burke will be biting his nails hoping his guy doesn't get picked.

Probably couldn't handle Hartley whispering in his ear about chocolate bars. Or something like that.

I forget - was he the plug that Feaster acquired or was he the one that Burke got? I need to decide whether I should complain about losing the 6th round pick or if I should downplay it, but I want to make sure it doesn't go against my own personal narrative about which GM sucks.

I'm going to take the high road here. We don't know any of this guys personal situation and obviously it was something that was his decision.
Hope he finds success in his life after hockey, sometimes it's all that these guys know.

TBH, you gotta respect the guy's wishes. Unless Dallas was acting in bad faith, it was a hockey move where the GM (Feaster, the google tells me) identified a need and got an asset he felt was better than a 6th rounder. If MacDermid is really thinking about life after hockey (as one poster suggests, and I could believe) then good on him. Yeah, it sucks as a Flames fan but whatever. I'll get over the lack of a 6th rounder (please no Zetterberg/Datsyuk references please please). Best of luck to him.

It won't come into play, not even a little.
