Default Idiot expresses himself on WestJet

http://www.calgarysun.com/2014/03/04...-westjet-pilot

Quote:
The public and WestJet have rallied to one of the carrier’s pilots whose female gender was questioned by a passenger.
Last Sunday,a traveller on a Calgary to Victoria flight left a note on a seat written on a napkin saying he’d rather not fly with a woman at the controls.
“I wish WestJet could tell me a fair lady is at the helm so I can book another flight!” wrote the man who identified himself as David in 12E.
“The cockpit of an airline is no place for a woman.”
The note goes on to say the proper role for a woman is as a mother, not a pilot.
“We’re short of mothers, not pilots WestJet,” he wrote, while mentioning the biblical Old Testament’s Proverbs 31 which extols the virtues of domestic women.
David then apologized for not being politically correct.
The 17-year pilot, Capt. Carey Steacy wrote on her Facebook page that the note’s writer asked flight attendants if she had enough flight hours under her belt to fly safely and to have earned her rank.
“So safety is important to you, too,” wrote the mother of two of the note that was collected by cleaning staff.
“In fact, there are no places not for ladies anymore.”
Steacy said that, just as she had a right to captain an airliner, David had the option to avoid boarding her plane.
“We all as humans have the same rights in this great country of ours...now, back to my most important role, being a mother,” she wrote.
On Tuesday, a WestJet official said the issue was now behind them, but not before the carrier insisted it greatly values all of its fliers.
“We are enormously proud of the professionalism, skills and expertise of our pilots and we are disappointed by this note,” they stated.
Commentors on news websites ridiculed David’s stance, siding with Steacy.
Wrote Dana: “Hey “David” .... this is 2014...did you know that women can now not only be great mothers, but be great pilots, great executives, great drivers...and guess what? We have the right to vote.”
Some people should be set on an ice float and pushed north.

They should have come back to him with a parachute and told him to pick where he'd like to jump out, so that he didn't have to continue on a flight with a female pilot.

ETA: oops, missed that they didn't find the note until after the fact. But still. What a tool.

We've been discussing it in the Aviation thread since yesterday (because us Avgeeks are WAY ahead of the media on stuff like this). Very good chance this fella is going to find himself on WestJet's no fly list.

Is it known if the flight attendants were female as well? Or did he only have an issue with the pilot being a woman?

I'm more then ok with female pilots.

I have a lot of trouble with elderly pilots, flying really slow with the left signal light of the plane on is frightening as hell, and I think old people should be put off on a island somewhere so that we can get faster lines in grocery stores as well.

I think it must be true, as he referenced Proverbs 31, Thine cockpit shall not be desecrated by a woman, lest yea be cast into the pits of eternal fire in hell.

actually it looks like women should be doing stuff like selecting wool and flax and work with eager hands. If it doesn't say women she be flying planes in the Bible, then they shouldn't be flying planes.

Also, she wears purple and does not eat the bread of idleness

Quote:
Proverbs 31

1 The sayings of King Lemuel—an inspired utterance his mother taught him.
2 Listen, my son! Listen, son of my womb!
Listen, my son, the answer to my prayers!
3 Do not spend your strength[a] on women,
your vigor on those who ruin kings.

4 It is not for kings, Lemuel—
it is not for kings to drink wine,
not for rulers to crave beer,
5 lest they drink and forget what has been decreed,
and deprive all the oppressed of their rights.
6 Let beer be for those who are perishing,
wine for those who are in anguish!
7 Let them drink and forget their poverty
and remember their misery no more.

8 Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves,
for the rights of all who are destitute.
9 Speak up and judge fairly;
defend the rights of the poor and needy.

Epilogue: The Wife of Noble Character

10 [b]A wife of noble character who can find?
She is worth far more than rubies.
11 Her husband has full confidence in her
and lacks nothing of value.
12 She brings him good, not harm,
all the days of her life.
13 She selects wool and flax
and works with eager hands.
14 She is like the merchant ships,
bringing her food from afar.
15 She gets up while it is still night;
she provides food for her family
and portions for her female servants.
16 She considers a field and buys it;
out of her earnings she plants a vineyard.
17 She sets about her work vigorously;
her arms are strong for her tasks.
18 She sees that her trading is profitable,
and her lamp does not go out at night.
19 In her hand she holds the distaff
and grasps the spindle with her fingers.
20 She opens her arms to the poor
and extends her hands to the needy.
21 When it snows, she has no fear for her household;
for all of them are clothed in scarlet.
22 She makes coverings for her bed;
she is clothed in fine linen and purple.
23 Her husband is respected at the city gate,
where he takes his seat among the elders of the land.
24 She makes linen garments and sells them,
and supplies the merchants with sashes.
25 She is clothed with strength and dignity;
she can laugh at the days to come.
26 She speaks with wisdom,
and faithful instruction is on her tongue.
27 She watches over the affairs of her household
and does not eat the bread of idleness.
28 Her children arise and call her blessed;
her husband also, and he praises her:
29 “Many women do noble things,
but you surpass them all.”
30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
31 Honor her for all that her hands have done,
and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.

Really? Is there really a shortage of mothers in the world?

I personally know many mothers. I don't personally know any airline pilots. On every flight I've ever been on, the mothers greatly outnumber the airline pilots.

If he's so worried about women being away from their families, what about the flight attendants who were working the flight? I'm sure most, if not all, of them were women.

How does he know the pilot isn't already a mother?

In David in 12E's mind, if she was a mother*, then OBVIOUSLY she'd be barefoot in the kitchen raising her husband's children, not gallivanting across the skies.

*(she is)
