Default Question re: Luge/Ski Jumping on 2014-02-09

I noticed that Luge has 4 runs total. Can someone explain how the process works? I noticed that no one was cut from run 1 to run 2, just wondering what the point of all the runs is? is it a cumulative score? do they take the best score of all your runs? CBC has done a phenomenal job overall but my one complaint is the website says nothing about what each round means and what is needed to qualify to move on. Even the announcers seem to assume that the audience already knows. Maybe I'm just slow?

I see the mens ski jumping has two rounds tomorrow. Does anyone know how that works? do they cut down to a predetermined number after the first round?

I've been having a heck of a time trying to keep up with these things. Thanks in advance to anyone who can shed some light.

Pretty sure in luge the best average score of the four runs wins, or at least that's how I remember it.

best 30 of the first jump qualify for the second jump, in reverse order. Points of both jumps are added.

They add up the 4 times.

I can't think of any sport where the times would be averaged. They turn times into points in All Round speedskating but that's not the case here.

In all sliding sports the time is cumulative. Unlike the world cups, at The Olympic Games and at World Championships the competition is over 4 heats to ensure the best sliders win. It prevents someone who had one really good run from taking a win.

Assuming all competitors take the same number of runs, cummulative score and average score give the exact same rankings.
