Should Hartley get a contract extension?
Hartley is on his last year of his deal if I understand correctly.
Both Burke and Treliving seem to genuinely like Hartley and the job he did last season. So do you give him a contract extension? With one year left you risk the players tuning him out if they think he's a lame duck coach. Plus it gives Hartley confidence that the team really believes in him.
I would give him a 2 year extension making his contract end after the 2016-17 season. Treliving can still fire Hartley next off-season if he changes his mind about him.

Should probably wait and see what happens this season.

Of course. Doesn't have to do it now though, let him finish out the year.
It's a given he should, he's made this team better than what they look.

Yes. I don't see any reason why you wouldn't.

I don't see the team tuning Hartley out anytime soon, or any idiot of a player betting on Hartley being out after next season. So really, non-issue either way IMO.

If the team hasn't fallen apart by Christmas, he gets re-upped.

Why would Treliving extend a coach that he hasn't worked with yet? That would be foolish. I expect they will go into next season and have talks with Hartley's agent as the season goes on but really there's no point in extending him until the 2nd half of next season at the earliest. The talent level is still pretty thin on this team and there's always the possibility that the season turns into a gong show (not the worst thing considering who will be available next draft).

Yes. It should be a top priority after the draft. Hartley has earned the extension and you also don't want a coach on their last year because they will think short term to save their job.

Hartley was effectively coaching for his job the day Burke was hired and it's worked well so far.

He has a job for next year. Why not just wait?

He deserves one, but why not wait a bit to see how things develop with him and Treliving?
Doesn't it make more sense to look at an extension at a time closer to the end of his contract?

Yes, absolutely. He's a good coach and is great with the young guys. He's the perfect fit for a re-build IMO and he has also been on the winning side when that time comes- a few years down the road. He has done an outstanding job this year given what he had to work with.

I would hope Burke would have learned from extending too early then firing Wilson. There is the chance that next season's Flames will not be able to replicate the competitive play they did last season and if that happens fans opinions will change fast.

If he can continue to grow on what he was able to establish last season (ie. not a flash in the pan) i'm all for it.
No need to rush it though.
