It's the criticism people have of the pit bull breed . . . . that it's a dangerous dog to have around because once it starts, it won't stop no matter what.

A picture like that only offers more evidence. Supporters of the breed say there's no such thing as a bad dog, only bad owners.

One of my Golden's rolled in a porcupine hide - no hint of where the body it once covered might have been - a few years ago and even that light exposure required pliers to get about 30 quills out of her head.

One of my dad's hunting buddies had a Lab who hated porcupines, and every time he saw one, it was pretty much a guaranteed trip to the vet. Some dogs just can't stay away from them. I'm sure my dad's friend's dog was thinking everytime "Boy, these things have gotten the better of me the last 15 times....but not today".

That's hilarious...I grew up in the country and most of the dogs we owned would have one run-in with a porcupine, and one only. After that, they'd keep their distance. But, some dogs never learn!

I believe the dog featured is a Bull Terrier.

Just curious, because my dog has tried to go after them before but I've stopped her, do you really have to bring the dog to the vet to get them taken out? What would they do differently to take the quills out.

What is the worst that can happen from a dog getting porcupine quills in his snout?

You don't have to take them to the vet, but it can be worth the money - especially if they have them in sensitive areas such as the nose and mouth.
The vet can put the dog out and remove them without worrying about having his fingers snapped off.

Out at my cabin there used to be a few stray/practically feral dogs and every summer you'd see one of them wandering down the highway with a few quills. It's a pretty sad sight. No vets or owners to help those guys out. They were pretty hungry dogs, looking for food and probably hoping to eat that porcupine, but none of them were ever that stupid.
