I read somewhere that the Red Hot Chili Peppers had their instrument tracks pre recorded for the half time show. I think they did actually sing but everything else was on tape. I can kinda see why - the sound in a stadium that big would be horrible and apparently NFL officials just didn't want to take a chance.
Not sure if Bruno Mars had anything pre recorded or if he was actually singing
We recorded a track for the day, just banged one out from our hearts that was very like in spirit to the versions we have been playing live the last few years with our beloved Josh on guitar.
For the actual performance, Josh, Chad, and I were playing along with the pre recorded track so there was no need to plug in our guitars, so we did not. Could we have plugged them in and avoided bumming people out who have expressed disappointment that the instrumental track was pre recorded? Of course easily we could have and this would be a non-issue. We thought it better to not pretend. It seemed like the realest thing to do in the circumstance. It was like making a music video in front of a gazillion people, except with live vocals, and only one chance to rock it. Our only thought was to bring the spirit of who we are to the people.

The Super Bowl half time show was live before 111,000,000+ people. It's recorded so things go smoothly and drastically reduce the risk of something going wrong.
This isn't Saturday Night Live where the performances are supposed to be live as part of the niche. Super Bowl is the biggest production of the year, it has to go right.
The fact that anyone would think is not lip-synced is the bigger news story.

And they have 5 minutes or so to set the whole thing up. It's much much guaranteed to have something go drastically wrong if they were worried too much about live sound. It has to be perfect, and so, there is no other option besides using pre recorded tracks.
I love RHCP and always will, but it sounds like a saving face message for guys who didn't bother to check, whether it was the setup crew or the Chilis themselves.

I don't believe it was lip synced. The vocals were live from everything I've read. The instruments were pre-recorded as Flea says. It's what you sign up for when doing the superbowl halftime show nowadays.
The reason the audio company for the shows gives is simply they do not have time to sound check everything in the 3 1/2 minutes they have to get going. So vocals to canned track is the only way they have gone for about two decades. That includes, for the most part, the national anthems. Often the vocals have a track they can sing over or chose not to so that is often even canned. The Black Eyed Peas likely should have used the canned vocal route instead of trying to sing live.....
As mentioned most awards shows do the same thing and heck as we all know many hip hop/pop acts use completely pre-recorded vocals for a good chunk of their concerts with a few notable exceptions (Pink being one who's mic is always live...for good or bad).

Actually playing would have been the "realest" thing to do.....

Except they likely weren't given the choice. The music is to be canned the vocals live if they wanted them live. The other choice was to not do the half time show.
So they accepted and the. Did the most real thing they could under the circumstances...record the instruments earlier in the day/week and keep the vocals live.

Sadly, i think there is a time when they would have passed on the gig.
RHCP peaked with Mother's Milk, IMO.

Shows like this don't have to be pre recorded, but they are because it's easier and safer, and i'm sure the NFL forces or persuades artists to do it this way.
Music is an art, and part of art is the reality and rawness of the art. Going to a concert to see the artist lip synch is not what most people want to see. If that person can't stack up without pre recorded tracks, too bad for them.
Take a look at a band like Whitehorse and all the instruments and looping devices 2 people play during a song to make a great piece of music.
Obviously the Superbowl is a different animal all together but in my opinon, great artists don't lip synch, whether we're talking about voice or instrumental tracks.

The circumstance would be that the Super Bowl Half Time Production always pre-records the backing track for musical performances. Since the RHCP couldn't change the circumstance they decided to be real and not fake plugging in. Personally, I think Chad should have played without drumsticks and that Flea should have plugged in a patch cord that was roughly sheared at the two foot mark.
