Canucks sign Vinny Prospal to AHL tryout. Upd: decides to retire

Laurence Gilman just spoke to the media about Vinny Prospal, who will be signed to a PTO in Utica. #Canucks

"He's a 38-year-old veteran NHL player. He's expressed an interest to play with us. He has a good history with John Tortorella" - Gilman
Canucks are looking desperate for a quick pick-me-up. Either no one wants any of their pieces, or the contracts they've signed their players to are warranting overpayment returns in management's eyes.

The fanbase felt burned after the failed Derek Roy experiment so unlikely they would go after a rental. Gillis is always whining about how hard it is to make a deal but he's screwed himself by singing players like Higgins and Burrows to above market deals, trading for bad contracts like Booth and misusing draft picks in bad trades (Ballard, Roy) and poor drafting. It was suggested they wanted Cammy but they don't have what we want/need. So this is the option they turn to. Desperate.
It's been no secret, but the Canucks are going nowhere. Especially now with Henrik Sedin and Santorelli shelved, this team is looking barely average these days. The fact that Prospal could help them I think speaks volumes about their depth, and not in a good way.

That is pretty desperate, guy is 39 in a couple weeks and hasn't played hockey in 9 months.
You never know I guess, maybe he gets them an extra win or two if he chips in with 15-20 points down the stretch, their offence is terrible and I have no doubt they will cheap out at the deadline and burn another year of the sedins.
If they don't add some serious firepower in the next month they are first round cannon fodder.
Torts seems to get the guy motivated...but even then, this is grasping at straws.
On a side note, can Prospal still skate? I don't remember him being that fast at the best of times. 9 months out of hockey and at 39, I imagine he'd need rockets to keep up with the team.
I see nothing wrong with this move, low risk, if it pans out they get a good depth player to help with injuries. If it doesn't he goes back to the NHL/retires again.
The guy had 30 points last year in a shortened season, 55 the year before that, he has always been a solid player.

To me the biggest indicator the Canucks are going nowhere is the fact that the loss of Santorelli is a big deal to them.

The Canucks are like the 09 Flames. They don't realize that they have 0% chance at the cup.
I can't wait until 2016/17 when the Flames have a surplus of young talent and the Canucks are starting their rebuild.
Yeah but they are still competitive and possibly a playoff team and IMO you don't blow it up until you start missing the playoffs entirely. The issue with the Flames is that after missing the playoffs for three straight years they went into the 4th year still going for it. The team needed to be blown up after missing the playoffs in 2011.
