Default Work related OH&S question

Since CP is a wealth of knowledge I was hoping someone here could help me find the answer I'm looking for.

I'm wondering if anyone knows how often it is required by OH&S for a piece of lifting equipment/rigging equipment that is used to move large loads is required to be engineer inspected. Is it annually or every two years? Thanks.

I may be wrong, but I believe OHS only mentions inspections should take place before every lift, but nothing about re-certifications (unless it's dedicated for certain equipment, then it needs re-certification). I think it's the spec the rigging equipment is built to that governs the requirements for load testing. Ex, ASME B30.9?

Been a while since I had to look at it. When I have more time I'll look at the OHS code.

In my job I work with all kinds of rigging equipment on a daily basis but I am not sure to be honest without knowing what you are working with. When working with slings, lifting chains, shackles ect a visual inspection before your lift is standard procedure. At our plant all our overhead cranes get inspected once a year. Also anything that is built for lifting has to be inspected by an engineer before it is put into service.

This would pertain to a jib boom/truss boom attachment for a Telehandler (Zoom Boom)

I know with work safe BC they require inspections and recertification for most lifting equipment on a yearly basis and with all the trades coming to work in Calgary they bring those standards and expectations with them. I'm totally on board with this but was just wondering if Alberta OH&S had anything like that set in stone in the regs.

I know if I had any doubts about the condition of such equipment, say the welds, connnections or hydraulics, I'd ask for it to be inspected. Are you working for some company from Edmonton?

Go to part XIV, see if that helps.

I had to research this for some cranes that we have and it was so long ago I can''t remember what the end result was, but you have leeway to make your own schedule and they tend to point you back to manufacturer's recommended maintenance.

If you can't find what you're looking for, be a bit more specific and I'll try and help.

I'm federally regulated, so I don't know much about variances between provinces.

Given that people can get killed, pick up the phone and call the corporate lawyer for an OH&S opinion or referral.
