Default Burke Trade History - Notable Trades

Everyone knows of the big trades he's made. But I was cruising through his trade history and noticed some interesting smaller trades he made the in past that may be of some interest here.

Lee Stempniak

Burke actually traded Lee Stempniak at a trade deadline once before. In 2010 he traded him to Phoenix for Matt Jones (played 90 games in the NHL but doesn't seem to have been playing anywhere when traded, might have just been to balance contracts), a 4th round pick and a 7th round pick. Stempniak was having a much better season in 2010 when he was traded than he is now.. so might want to temper expectation of much of return there.

Curtis Glencross

This was way back in 2007 before Glencross had become an NHLer. But Burke traded him in Anaheim to Columbus with Zenon Konpnka and a 7th round pick for two prospects (Mark Hartigan and Joe Motzko) who didn't pan out and a 4th rounder.

SIZE

In Toronto he didn't give up much for size. He acquired Brad May for a conditional 6th rounder (conditions weren't met). Jay Rosehill was acquired for future considerations. Mark Fraser was picked up for Dale Mitchell (low level prospect). Aaron Varos was picked up for a conditional 7th. Mike Brown was gotten for a 5th rounder.

In Anaheim he was more willing to spend for toughness. Picked up Todd Fedoruk for a 2nd round pick. George Parros was acquired with a 3rd round pick for a 2nd and 3rd rounder (Anaheim acquired the better 3rd rounder).

Rebuilding Trade Deadlines

Went through a few of these with the Leafs.

2011 (these were all pre-trade deadline but close to it)
  • Acquired Joe Colborne and 1st round pick (plus a 2nd if Boston made it to the cup or resigned player) for Kaberle
  • Acquired 1st round pick and 3rd round pick for Kris Versteeg
  • Acquired Jake Gardiner, Joffrey Lupul and conditional 4th round pick for Francois Beauchemin

2010
  • Lee Stempniak trade mentioned above
  • Acquired 7th round pick for Joey MacDonald!
  • Added Chris Peluso for a 6th round pick (Doesn't look like Peluso was ever signed)
  • Acquired 5th round pick for Martin Skoula
  • And the day before they acquired Skoula and Luca Caputi for Alexei Ponikarovsky

2009
  • Acquired Olaf Kolzig, Jamie Heward, Andy Rogers and a 4th round pick for Richard Petiot (whoever that is)
  • Acquired 2nd round pick and a conditional 4th for Nik Antropov
  • Acquired 2nd round pick for Dominic Moore

L. Schenn for JVR would be a notable trade for me.

That Gardiner/Lupel trade is stupid good. The value he got for old Beauchemin is great.

It really worked out because Lupul became a beast in Toronto. Beau human has been a solid top 4 D for the Ducks but to get a top prospect and top 6 forward for a guy that is a number 4 is pretty awesome.

The deal with the Ducks, the Phaenuf deal, and the JVR trade really set Toronto up nicely with key assets.

Franson, and Lombardi for Lebda was a huge steal. Imagine trading Butler or SOB for a bad contract and young budding top 4 D?

Maybe falls in "the big trades" but landing the 2nd and 3rd overall pick in the 1999 draft and pick up the Sedin's sticks out the most for me. Obviously hindsight is 20-20 but he managed to acquire Vancouver's franchise players for the foreseeable future (for better or for worse ).

I mentioned I wasn't listing all of the trades... everyone knows the Schenn/JVR one or the Sedin stuff... just some trades that people might not know about that he made.

Most of the time Burke wins his trades, which is a good thing for us. Too bad we didn't have him one year earlier when we actually had some stronger pieces to trade.

On a side note, I am adding nothing to the topic here, but I played in the Olds Men's open this past summer with Jay and he is a great guy!

If you look into the history of that trade that might be the most complicated, difficult trade in NHL history.

Funny how getting a 21 year-old future star is considered his "Bad Trade".

He got Franson for free essentially at age 24. Lebda's career was done at that point.

Until I see Burke do a good deal for the Flames, the bad feeling I have about it won't go away.

No one wins every trade. But Burke's overall record is impeccable IMO.

And I agree about those 2011 trades - a very impressive collection of deals.

By the way - that's what he means about trying to speed up the rebuild, IMO. It doesn't mean trying to win now, it means picking up 22, 23, 24 year olds that are ready to break into the NHL now (as opposed to 2nd round picks that are 3 or 4 years away from contributing at all. Trades like those where we picked up Colborne, Knight, Russell etc.
