Probably strangled him first and then did the atomic wedgie to make it look more like an accident. It could be the difference between 1st/2nd degree murder and manslaughter.

No, the medical examiner determined the cause of death was from the elastic band being stretched over his head. If the victim was strangled, it would be really obvious in an autopsy.
