Too much for him. Has never been the same player he once was and clearly never will be.

He eats big minutes for them. What other choice did they have.. They had no one to replace him.

In raw terms, yes it is to much... however given the upcoming marketplace I actually think he's leaving money on the table. The UFA market is really thin had Phaneaf gone to market I think he would have been offered 7.5-8.0 for the same term by some team. He'd easily have been the best defenseman available (which says more about the market then Phaneaf).

Seems like a lot, I've never thought about it but would you give Gio 7 years, 7 mil? I'd take him as the captain and top dman over Phaneuf any day. He just isn't overhyped by the media like Phaneuf.

It looks like they are negotiating a hostage situation in a Motel 6.

I'm sure there's other teams out there that would have paid the same price for him. Don't think that option(pay less) was there for the Leafs.

They really made an awkward photo shoot of Dion physically signing the contract. Only Toronto or Edmonton would crap out something that cheesy

The problem is (as another poster previously mentioned) that when you pay David Clarkson 5.25, you essentially take away any negotiating power you have to pay your top guys anything less than 7.
Way too much for Phaneuf, but Toronto set it's own market. Even average guys get 5 million over there.

This is the kind of thinking that causes teams to be stuck in mediocrity. Which is exactly what we hope for the Leaves.

He's a solid player and does a lot of things, but that really is a lot of money over a long time. I have a feeling they might regret this deal at some point along the way.

It had nothing to do with paying Clarkson. Its been said many times that if Dion hit free agency that he would have gotten more than $7 million. I've heard up to $8 million.
I personally would not pay him $7 million, but he did take a discount to stay in TO.

If Wideman is being paid 5ish, I'm ok with Dion making 7. He's a dynamic player and their captain.

I liked Phaneuf on the Flames, but like others have said, he isn't the same player as he used to be. Leafs are overpaying as usual.

You've listened to BigTuna a little too much.
On the market he probably would have got some big cash from a mediocre team with plenty of room, but it likely would've been 7 on those teams and closer to 6 on a contender.
If you don't think signing Clarkson and Bozak to big money had anything to do with what Phaneuf got, you're wrong. Phaneuf did not take a discount to play for the Leafs.

Sorry Flames fans. The trade is still arguably the worst ever for the Flames franchise as much as many of you wish he would be a bust he's still a good hockey player. He would have got this money in free agency and this is the cost of doing business in the NHL as the Rangers paid a big price to keep Lundqvist this season as well. The long term deals are scary but it's the direction the league is going and in about 5 more years where some of these deals don't look as good maybe the GM's across the league will be more weary but right now long term deals are the trend.
