Default Bauer Hockey unveils new hockey equipment

one of my customers sent me this press release from Bauer. it's pretty cool - they totally redid hockey gear. i have no clue how they would ever do this system for the general public (since you need to get a full body scan), but take a look....

some highlights from the 3 page press release

Quote:
CHICAGO – December 19, 2013Bauer Hockey, the world’s leading manufacturer of ice hockey equipment, today unveiled BAUER OD1N, the most revolutionary line of equipment ever introduced to the sport of hockey. The equipment, which took more than two years to develop and has never been seen before, was specifically designed for a select few of the world’s most elite-level athletes. Those athletes are expected to begin wearing the new product this month and during international play in February.

The BAUER OD1N product line includes a re-imagined hockey skate, a fully personalized protective body suit and an ultra lightweight, customized goal pad constructed with materials never before used in hockey. Each of the products was designed to provide a significant on-ice performance advantage that is scientifically proven.

“We challenged our Research, Design and Development team in St Jerome, Quebec to create the ‘concept car’ of hockey equipment,” said Kevin Davis, CEO and President, Bauer Performance Sports. “We asked them, ‘What if?’ What if we took away all the limitations we normally have, like materials, cost and commercialization process and focused solely on creating equipment that can be scientifically proven to make players better. The team focused on this challenge for more than two years and the result is BAUER OD1N.”

The BAUER OD1N product was developed alongside some of the game’s best players, including Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews, Nic Backstrom, Alex Ovechkin, Claude Giroux and Henrik Lundqvist. All six players played instrumental roles in the development process and continue to work with the company to fine tune the product in advance of international competition in February.

“Today’s hockey equipment is already so good, that it’s tough to imagine that there is still another leap to take as far as technology, but that’s exactly what Bauer did,” said Jonathan Toews, Chicago Blackhawks and Team Canada.

Lundqvist, the lone goaltender selected by Bauer to take part in the project, has been wearing the BAUER OD1N goal pads since late November. The New York Rangers netminder is once again expected to be the starting goaltender for Team Sweden in February.

“They are so much lighter than the old pads, you feel faster and you have more energy,” Lundqvist said. “For me, when I play the game, it’s all about quickness and reaction time. To have a pad that helps me in those areas of my game is a major advantage for me. “

Seems like a ton of hype but I'm probably just angry at the fact they decided to give the guy a ultra tinted visor.

What I imagined when I read this was a full body protective suit made of space aged materials that are like 75% lighter and, offer greater protection and are super slim. What I see is regular hockey equipment that might be slightly lighter.

Looks lame

Those skate blades look like they are going to break quite easily and be quite expensive to repair

My understanding is this stuff was made for the Olympics and will likely never be available at a retail level.

I can't wait until some Level E, ankle skater, intramural Beer leager shows up with that whole gettup including the tinted visor and number 69.

Bonus points if he has a NHL pro stock Vapor Stick.

I believe bauers top end skate currently retails for $900.....I'd have to guess those bad boys would be somewhere in the $1,300 range.

I wonder if you can order the od1n with the labatts blue/old Dutch abdominal cut?

I still haven't converted to skates with the composite uppers. These are weird and scary therefore I don't like it.

Wonder if they scan your junk to make a cup?

It would be nice for a change to have a cup that fits properly and is not to small.

I hope the tech was developed with the thought process of limiting injuries on other players.

For example, pre-80's, pads were intended to keep a player safe when they hit the ice or boards too hard. The design was simple, stuff high density cotton into material to absorb some impact.

Post 80's, the hard plastic shell for elbow pads and shoulderpads entered and I believe are a direct contributor to many injuries especially concussions.

Before, a player would slow up on player to player contact knowing the padding was not gonna stop the hitter from being unscathed.

Nowadays, you hit someone with an elbow or shoulder, the hitter barely feels it at all.
