Pop star Madonna has apologised for using a racial slur to refer to her son on an Instagram post.
The singer uploaded a snapshot of 13-year-old Rocco Ritchie boxing on Friday night, with the offensive epithet used in a hashtag accompanying the photo.
"I am sorry if I offended anyone with my use of the 'n-word'," she said in a statement issued on Saturday. "It was not meant as a racial slur. I am not a racist. There's no way to defend the use of the word."
Madonna's comment was swiftly deleted from her Instagram account after some of her 1.1 million followers berated her for using the hashtag "#dis#####"
She later re-posted the same photo on Instagram, with a defiant (and largely unprintable) new caption that began: "Ok, let me start this again."
On Saturday afternoon however, Madonna deleted the post entirely, and instead released a statement through her publicist, saying "forgive me".
"It was all about intention," she continued. "It was used as a term of endearment toward my son who is white. "I appreciate that it's a provocative word and I apologize if it gave people the wrong impression."
##### is slang for my brotha which is slang for my friend...
One of my favorite things I used to do when a new person is around my friends and me is to give my friends a hug saying my #####! I love the reactions.
The "But you're not Black!" look is my favorite.
It's a big part of hip-hop culture. I, and my friends, grew up in the hip-hop culture and subsequently my friends, Black, Asian, East Indian and Caucasian would use it in our environment. Mostly it started while playing basketball. Of course you don't want to offend people so it stays with in your comfort areas. If there was the 6 of us, and you were there for the first time, we'd be comfortable in our environment. It's the application of the use in a public forum were heads turn and people can be offended. Madonna put out the picture on her public forum to millions and people responded much like others in this thread.
There is a funny memory where we were meeting up at my friends house. I came in with the hug and do our "What's up my #####?!" Then release the hug and go around the corner to where my buddy brought his black friend, of whom I never met before. I came in and did the same thing to him and we laughed. He was expecting me to be embarrassed or taken back but the timing of it was priceless. I saw him a few times since and we still laughed about it.

Reason: "Wrote while watching football game" distraction
Well, deal with it. I wasn't cheering for Canada either way. Nothing worse than arrogant Canadian fans. They'd be lucky to finish 4th. Quote me on that. They have a bad team and that is why I won't be cheering for them.
I am not sure whether it is racist or not (I would think yes it is) but either way it is a stupid phrase, especially for an old woman like her to use, so she should be in hot water.

Yeah, you shouldn't be using that word.

The point is, if your doing it to hurt someone you're an a-hole. I'm using the term exactly the way it's supposed to be used. To show affection and comradery. To say I can't use it is racist. It's social programming. It's the same with all ethnicities that say only they can use a specific term. It's a touchy subject to most, but like Louie CK above it doesn't have to be.

Do you realize how ignorant you sound?
Just because you're not saying it to be racist doesn't mean it's not a racist term. Your position is laughable. How often do you throw that term around when black people you don't know are present? I bet never ... and what does that say?
You don't just get to change the historical context of a word because you drop a consonant and "you're not saying it to be racist".

In my courses, I’m more interested in raising questions than in finding answers to them. I think the questions lead to potential self-discovery. It’s not about whether or not a person uses the n-word. I try to move the class beyond easy binaries—“Well, blacks can use it, but whites can’t.” That line of thinking doesn’t take us very far at all. What we are trying to do, at least the way I have conceptualized and practiced this discovery, is so much more. The class strives to teach us all manner of ways to talk about, think about and to understand ourselves, and each other, and why and how we fit in the rest of the world.
It's more about moving past the race card then anything and we have a long way to go.

You would be doing me a favour if you did this in front of me since I would know you are an unfunny, classless, dbag without having to waste any more time with you than one introduction. Very efficient and considerate of you.

Hardly surprising. Madonna's entire career has been built on appropriating the trends and habits of others, stripping them of any context, and trying to pass them off as her own. I find her one of the most objectionable individuals in pop culture.
As an aside, and in respect of TBQH, is it me, or is it really unsettling when white people take it upon themselves to 'fight' to use the N-word, no matter how intellectualized they try to make their position?

Telling someone that it's still a racist word whether they think so or not is hardly "white people fighting the use of the word". If someone legitimately thinks it's not racist, someone should correct them.
