So I just had an awesome vacation that included the Kootenays (specifically Upper Arrow Lake & the natural springs in the surrounding area), Whistler (visited a buddy) and Vancouver Island (Tofino, Ucluelet, Kennedy Lake) and I had a great time. Beautiful weather everywhere I went, and it seems I had a lilttle luck because apparently it rained just days prior in all those places.

I won't bore you with the details of my awesome trip because I've got a bone to pick with fataheads that bring glass bottles onto beaches & into hotsprings.

Yeah, you'd think that people in this day & age were just a little more respectful of the environment etc, but thats just simply not the case.
Because I have a dog, my awareness of broken glass may be somewhat heightened, but no more so than you young (and not so young) fathers & mothers.

Glass everywhere. I must have bent over to pick up glass at least 200 times in the last 11 days.

IT p*ssES ME OFF!

So, I've decided to boycott glass bottles for individual portions. The thing that sucks is that I prefer my beer in bottles. I'm sure many of you do too. I will pose this question: Do you consider where you are taking your bottles when purchasing?

You should. There is no excuse for showing up to the beach or a natural spring with bottles. If you were too forgetful to buy cans, the booze should stay at camp.
God knows that if I were in charge of doling out poetic justice, the bringers of bottles would bear the scars of broken glass on their feet every time they visit a beach or a spring.

Not everyone who consumes beverages out of glass containers while outdoors is irresponsible with them.

No need to boycott glass bottles. Just advocate proper disposal of them.

Careful disposal is irrelevant. Ever dropped your drink? Did your can shatter? Did you manage to pick up every shard of glass from the bottle that did shatter? Why do you need glass in places where people & animals frolick barefoot? You know that in a spring you can cut your foot & not notice for hours?

Answer to the beach question: Every beach I was at. Upper Arrow Lake (right by Nakusp), Kennedy Lake, Long Beach, St Leons springs, Halfway springs, the rest stop on the TCH at the summit of Rogers Pass, you name it, I found glass.

Wherevever you go, take out what you took in.
I won't even discard cigarette butts anywhere till I find a garbage.
If you place your bottles and cans beside a garbage can somebody will
turn them into money.

I know what you are saying about respect of the enviroment it constantly amazes me what people do. I don't even want to talk about it. But I would love to see fines go up away up for polluting or littering!

and not picking up dog crap. Make the fine $2000, end of problem [/b][/quote]
or have a deposit on it when you buy the dog, that way you can just return the 'business' for 5 cents.

As far as dropping your drink goes...

Two words: Beer Cozy

As far as why someone would need glass in places where people frolick barefoot...

Beer tastes like it should in bottles and closer to monkey p*ss when in cans.

Yep, I agree 100%.

4X4, you are making two big assumptions:
- That most people think
- That most people give a flying Fata about anybody but themselves.

These are the people who drop a glass bottle, watch it shatter, and say to themselves "well, at least I don't have to clean it up."

Damn straight!

Bottles are best normally, cuz they are *much* better for keeping a cold beer cold. It takes more heat to warm up the glass, and heat transmission is much slower through glass than aluminum. Also, the bottle causes less turbulence than the sharp lip of the can, leading to a smoother, better-tasting beer.

Cans are fine for camping, because they're much easier to cool down quickly than bottles due to the above-mentioned thermodynamic properties. That's important if you've got more beer than cooler space. Also, the stackability, crushability, and weight of empty cans is far superior.

Yes, I spent waaaaay too much time thinking about this. Just wanted to weigh in and point out that bottles are good...but cans are better for camping.

Rico, did you check out Long Beach? Beautiful place. Same with Kennedy Lake.

Cube, your analysis of cans & bottles is spot on...

No, my real beef is just that people even bring the things to these places. Sorry Reaper, but just because you've got crazy glue in your palm doesn't mean that everyone else does. The things get dropped and sometimes tossed. Kids & dogs, and even hawk-eyed adults are prone to stepping on the shards. Its not a big deal, so why the hell can't people just respect the wilderness?

Hey, no problem. You're entitled to your opinion.

I am one of those people who cleans up after themselves and doesn't make a lot of messes to begin with.

It is the few morons that ruin things for everyone else.
