So umm...help?
My ding dong kid was trying to get back to Strathmore from the city and they've come to a complete standstill somewhere around/past Chestermere. They have no idea where they are exactly, except that they made it past all those curves before and after Chestermere, so they could be anywhere around the Indus road or east of that. They can't see enough of anything to figure out exactly where they are.
So do I phone the cops to see about finding them? They are scared ####less to try and turn around anywhere because they can't see enough to move further forward.
I've never been in this situation before, so please don't mock me. I don't know what to do and neither do they.

Nothing in the car - it's an old Cabriolet (it's his GF's). He's got an iPhone 5c - I don't know anything about those. It would have it built in, yes? Or he could download something?
ETA: ok he was able to map it somehow. He says it appears they're just past or around RR 275?

Not too familiar with the iPhone apps, but he should be able to use MapQuest if it comes down to it.
If it's so bad out there he can't really see, get him pulled to the shoulder and make himself as visible as possible. If only to calm down for 10 or 15 minutes. Or to wait a while to see if conditions improve. No sense in driving worked up and nervous.

Number of options with a smart phone.
If they have Whatsapp (messaging application), you can download that and have them send you their location in that application which maps it out for you to see.
Also, they can open Google Maps which should show their location, ask them to take a screen shot of that map and send it to you.

If they are on the shoulder near RR275, have them crawl along until the RR and pull off the shoulder!! last thing they need is to be hit on the road - just pull into the RR but stay near the highway so they are safe and findable.

I believe everything will turn out ok. If they are pulled over the storm should die down in 30 then tell them this was a flash freeze storm so there will be a lot of ice.

My husband is talking to them on the phone. He had our son put their phone on speaker and has his GF holding it and he's talking them through it that way. They managed to map themselves into a turnaround and are headed back to Chestermere. Sounds like they are nearly to the exit. I told them to head to the Tims or go to the fire station - I already talked to the fire station and they said to tell them to come there, they'll put them up there for the foreseeable. They haven't heard if the road has been closed or not, but apparently they don't go out of town limits and we'd have to phone the RCMP or Rockyview county fire to rescue them if it comes to that.
Of course, he's being your typical 22 year old idiot who knows more than his father or I. If he manages to make it through this unscathed, I'm going to murder him when he gets back to Strathmore.

Phew! He's safe and sound at the Chestermere fire station. They've just been told Hwy 1 is being closed. I can't seem to find anything on that online yet, so don't repeat that as gospel.

Glad to hear everything worked out. This is a good example of why everyone should have an emergency kit in their car. If you get stuck in whiteout conditions and have to pull over for a few hours, it's nice to have a blanket, food, medical and other provisions while you wait it out.

Sorry, I don't understand this logic. I am 39, so not exactly ancient, and at 22, I had a mortgage, 2 vehicles, did my own taxes and was running my own business. Most of my friends were in the same or similar position. When exactly did this happen that a 22 year old is considered a clueless, helpless child? I see this mentality or perception a lot now. Why are adult children still having their bums wiped by mommy and daddy?
